1917 (2019) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Patreon Poll winner time!!

1917 was the winner, so here we are.  This is set in World War 1, and it's such a unique way of telling a story.  It's filmed and edited to look like 1 continuous take, which is really remarkable.  That being said, this is a very edge of your seat, stressful movie!  I assume most war movies are stressful to watch, but this one just didn't let up.

Sure there were times where things were slow and we got to take a breather, but it didn't last long. My favourite scene is him deciding to run across the battlefield.  It was so beautiful and amazing.  The fact that running into the two soldiers was not planned, just makes it that much more impactful.

I like the fact that well known actors had small roles, it's not usually the case!

The music was also very well done.  I looked it up and the composer is Thomas Newman.  Son of Alfred Newman (a composer who won the academy award for best original score 9 times!), and cousin of Randy Newman.  It seems that being a music composer runs in the family lol

This was a very emotional and amazing movie to watch, thank you for choosing this one in the last Patreon poll! ๐Ÿ˜

Reminder that you need your own copy of the movie to watchalong, and that there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

That sounds so strange, yet very interesting at the same time!

For fun, you might also enjoy a small, 1-shot film that Woody Harrelson directed called, "Lost in London (2017)" (100 min). It's based on his own experience of what happened that night. It premiered and was performed live in real-time direct to theaters and takes place in real-time all over London. (Amazon has it for rental.)

Oh, I'm much more intrigued now. I love it when people say a movie is realistic because it's so similar to what they've been through!

I had a friend who serve aboard U.S. fast attack submarines from 1977 through 1983. He and his buddies on the boat saw "Das Boot" in the theater and he told me it was the most realistic submarine film he'd ever seen (up to that time).

Yes, using film makes it so much more impressive! At some point I want to watch some Hitchcock films. I made a few short films and long scenes are TIRING (though mines weren't long at all, it's still very tiring) I remember there was so much hype and positive reviews when Black Hawk Down came out, and that Josh Hartnett had two epic movies release the same year (the other one was Pearl Harbour). I think Black Hawk Down may just be my next war movie!!

Hitchcock's "Rope" had a major limitation that modern filmmakers do not have today - film physically loaded into cameras can only be minutes long, whereas digital storage can be of greater capacity. It's still practical to limit scene length and to continue to use proven tricks to give the illusion of continuity (actors and crew get tired!). My favorite war film is Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down" (2001).

Now that you say this, I have heard a lot of people mention Das Boot! I think it would be great to watch since it's from a German perspective

Verowak

Das Boot (1981) is a great WWII film, notably from a German perspective.

It seems he's scored quite a few amazing movies. I like it when you can spot a composer's style!! I have a massive list of Pixar movies that I've missed, so I'll have to get to Elemental at some point lol

Verowak

Thomas Newman is fantastic and has a very distinct style. If you ever want a reason to go see Pixar's "Elemental," he scores that one too. His music combined with the amazing animation (which the trailers don't do justice to) result in one of those magical movie worlds that you just want to live in.

WastedPo

Yes! They all looked so young, but I didn't know if it was because I'm getting older or if they are actually young ๐Ÿคฃ

Verowak

Love the fact that most of the soldiers in this film actually are teens or in their early 20's and not 40 year old's trying to play teens for once.
