A lot of these are from the light novel yes, while some parts are from side stories (that are also novelized in short volumes).

First season they were mostly fluff (and the Petit ones were just not that interesting). Second season breaktime are amazing and add a lot of context. Third season breaktime are a required watch to the point that many wondered why they weren't a part of the main series.
