Nisio ordered this story as if Araragi was telling it himself, and the order gives us more insight into Araragi. In Bake, when he tells us about this talk with Hanekawa, he conveniently skips over his antics and jokes. At that point, he tries to portray himself as a hero and doesn't feel comfortable talking about the whole encounter. Nise had a lot of family themes. Telling that story made Araragi want to talk about Hanekawa's "family" situation, and how bad that made him feel. The deeper you get into Monogatari Series the more of Araragi's facade falls off as he begins to open up. I wonder if Ben or Anna will pick up on this later on. I sure didn't on my first watch.

Monogatari Series follows the Nisio Isin's light novel release order relatively closely, so it's not like Nisio Isin thought about what the anime viewers would think. The story being told not in any chronological order is a deliberate choice that makes you appreciate the nuances of the characters. We see Hanekawa throughout the series and we THINK we know what she's like, but there's some things that don't make sense and make you question "What's Hanekawa's deal anyway?" and Nisio Isin comes in at the right time to explain it. The fact the arcs are out of chronological order helps you make sense of the storyline in a way that makes the most emotional and intellectual impact, rather than the most sense.

Amazing discussion. This is probably my least rewatched arc in the series. I just saved it in my memory as the weakest arc and never really wanted to come back to it. But from this first episode, I have to say, I think I was wrong. The range of emotions this one episode made me feel is incredible. And after understanding the whole meta-narrative shenanigans a bit more after rewatching the show over the years, I can appreciate it even more.

You guys, I loved your analysis on this one. Your breakdown of Araragi as a character had me pumping fists! Hanekawa's heartbreak is one of the few character arcs that I feel keenly, and the way you two analyse helps me to see just how accomplished the Monogatari series are in terms of writing. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!
