Usually the lovable characters who are clearly on the chopping block are naive - they accidentally stumble upon something they shouldn't have, and they die because of it. Hughes wasn't like that. Yes, he was a goofy, lovable character, but as a military man he was very competent, and everything he came across he did so because he was an intelligent, driven, and capable man. He had the supporting protagonist vibe, and so anyone would expect him to have some degree of plot armor, but fun fact: no. He simply looked to deep and paid the price for it.
