Rub strips!

Recently I was cutting up some of the leftover brass strips, and there were some amazing guesses as to what I would use them for!

Some of my favourites guesses include; wind chimes, front door trim, fuses, sock suspenders, chopsticks, shoe horns, and a cribbage board.

I'm afraid the truth isn't as fun - there is a lot of surge / swell in this marina, and the snatching of the mooring lines was starting to wear grooves into the cap rail. These chafe strips will prevent that from happening - and I also fitted some scrap hose to protect the lines themselves.

...I know this isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but after all the amazing guesses I thought I should probably share the real use!

Next thing we'll hear about is waxing down the mooring lines with the custom wax applicator Leo made out of a some extras brass. He'll bend the bras into a "U" shape and put a stainless pulley on it and attach the whole to an old piece of teak, fashion a handle. You lube the mooring line with liquid beeswax and stroke this contraption up and down on it to distribute the wax so the mooring lines bear smoothly on the brass anti-abrasion plates. If you put your ear closely to the sound of the line sliding on the brass plate, you'll be able to hear Pachelbel's Canon in D reverberating from the brassy surface. It's that kind of boat, right? Like something out of a dream world.

As an old captain of mine once said, "Chafe never sleeps!"
