Interesting. I've never actively considered the pitched down effect of a kick adding to the realism.

Yes tuned kicks happen when you literally have a guy adding a Sine at a specific tune. that "guy" generally does not have a good playback either so then can not decide on the ADSR so it fits with the top end. Also, can not decide if the tune is put in correctly to start causing dissonance. After when you play it four to the floor it becomes a mess with buildups of bass. If you can't hear low end work on headphones :) or get two subs you can fix eq of. For instance the SVS1000 "pro". also, getting low end right in a room is an absolute nightmare :).

Are we unable to hear the kicks because we don't have low-end extension? (My kick drum experiment was actually horrible because I don't have any low-end extension...)
And would you say that tuned kicks happen if you set the exact Hz in operator, rather than leaving it on course or is it a pitch envelope thing?
