Mix Critique and breaking rules to fit genre

So, here is a great example of mixing towards a genre. This time broken 80's. In my terminology I use 'shit' but what I meant to say is. Imaging a 40 year old cassette tape playing back. It's not going to have beautiful highs, clarity and thick low end. Instead it will be hissy and wobbly. Embracing that 100% will then give you 'dreamwave'/lofi 80's pop.. or whatever the genre is where you purposefully neglect any thoughts to making it sound 'more' and make it sound 'less' instead.

If the intent was to make it sound deep house ish, a lot more work needs to be done. But, I would embrace the feel of a sony walkman found in a damp basement. It's a huge genre people are into.

Yeah, it is always dependent. We can also draw a random reference and mix it to that style. Also, I can only do these if it's a limited amount of tracks haha

Super fun watching you break things. We should submit more tracks that require this treatment, like one of those break everything rooms people pay for but with audio mixing ha!

Good point, natural vocals on a Walkman track might sound incredible..if those vocals are high quality vs the rest.

try retune speed 20, flex-tune 20, humanize 20 as starting point for more natural sound on autotune
