Just keep it green, or maybe a little orange bit don't clip. If you want to clip use a clipper :).

Thanks for the answer, G! I had one follow up- I actually record a lot of synths from hardware. So is there an ideal level for going into plugins, or is it simply“don’t clip during recording and get it as loud as possible?” I was under the impression headroom is important, but I guess it can be brought down via utility or clip gain later?
(PS) I DID buy the PML course! Cross my heart. I think you used an SSL EQ going red (saturating) on the Rim in the percussion section (module 2) of the class. But it sounded great so and I appreciate what you said about “misusing” plugins if the result is desirable (ie: saturation).

Ableton says it has a 32 bit audio engine, so if you clip between plugins and not on the master will you actually digitally clip?
