What makes a good kick?

Short list for 4 to the floor:

1.  You need low end (lower than 60hz) and tune it

2. Make sure it's not too saturated to begin with (replace it)

3. Keep your low end mono

4. Play with your ADSR setting to make the kick short and tight

5. Cut boxiness out

6. Only saturate the top end

7. Just use a good kick to begin with :D

Great questions. 1. Every kick needs to be mixed into a song regardless where it came from. My suggestion is to load up a few kicks and see which works best for you without too much eqing. 2. Drumbus sucks a tremendous amount. If possible do not use it. but sometimes sucking is just what is needed haha. 3. Do not look for kicks that are tuned. 9 time out of 10 the track will suck more. Kicks go up to down in pitch. See point 1 instead

Great advice Guido, thanks. The boxyness in most kicks - would you expect to still find that there if it has come from a decent sample pack source? Also - the trick to adding low end using the drum buss's boom - will that not significantly distort the sound of the kick overall? Is it better to find a kick that is already playing at the fundamental note of the scale you are producing rather than 'booming' it into that area?

If that works for your music go for it. Personally I have replaced tons of those as they tend to lack realness

wouldn't it be easier to just make your own kick?
