The Vampire Diaries 5X20: What Lies Beneath

I still don't care about the Travelers. But, I did care about the Enzo stuff. And about Tyler potentially having his body inhabited permanently by a Traveler, so I think this episode has been the best one for a bit.

Damon is busy using Luke to try to find Enzo. Stefan is trying to talk him out of it, but it's not working. Tyler bursts in and tells them he's been possessed by a Traveler and that they plan to get Stefan and Elena's blood in order to get rid of all magical things (mostly their curse, but it would also kill all the vampires too). So, Damon switches Luke from looking for Enzo to doing a blocking spell of sorts that will hide them from the Travelers.

Elena, Stefan, Damon, and Caroline head up to Caroline's dad's cabin to hide out. However, Caroline is suspicious that maybe Elena and Stefan are back together since they are whispering and together a lot. She has no idea it's because Elena is having trouble keeping the Enzo secret from Damon.

So, in order to try to force the issue, while playing Never Have a Ever, Caroline plays, 'Never Have I Ever, Kissed a Salvatore Brother.' And Elena goes to clink glasses with her so they can both drink, and Caroline follows up with, 'Today.' Elena is confused since she knows she and Stefan are not a thing. However, Damon sort of quickly catches on and goes with, 'Never Have I Ever Lied Lied About Where Enzo Is'. (or something similar).

At this point, Elena quits and goes upstairs to take a bath. However, once she's in the water, the ghost of Enzo (who has been hanging around and recently realized he could interact with this side), decides to try to drown Elena. Thankfully, she manages to call out for Damon at one point and he comes to her rescue. Stefan then calls Bonnie and she confirms that the dead from the other side are currently able to interact with the living. Fun.

But, instead of killing her (or any of them right now), instead, he kidnaps Luke, so the cloaking spell is no longer active and the Travelers are on their way. Damon and Stefan find him tied up in the barn which smells like kerosene. Enzo then sets the place on fire and stakes Stefan (not in the heart), and maybe stakes Damon? (he definitely does something that's causing him pain, but it looks like he's just making him hold a rock).

Stefan manages to get his stake out, so Damon tells him to grab Luke and get out. Eventually, Damon is able to reason with Enzo telling him that both Marcos and Bonnie have come back, so he'll find a way to get him back too. But, if he wants that to happen, he can't kill him. Enzo lets him go.

They pack up to head home, and Elena asks Damon if he's still mad at her. He says he is. But also, he can't be near her or stay away from her and it's driving him crazy. They have a fairly charged kiss. And whens he asks what it was for, he tells her he had a shitty day and needed it. He heads back inside to keep packing, but the Travelers show up. They do some kind of magic on Elena and grab her. Zero chance Damon did not hear this.

While all this is going on, Bonnie and Jeremy are trying to find the body of the Traveler who is trapped inside of Tyler. If the Travelers find it first, he'll be in Tyler forever. And just as they find it, the Travelers show up and take it. Back at Tyler, he's writhing in pain and can see the life of the guy who is inside him. Bonnie knows this means they are making the transformation permanent. But there isn't a whole lot they can do at this point.

I was under the impression that this was the penultimate episode of the season, but we've actually got two more.
