Okay, so can someone please tell me that dad's wife was his son's stepmom and not his actual mother? I mean, I think this was on network TV so probably right?
So we've got a guy who is murdered at the party for him where he's announced to take over as the CEO of the company by his dad (the current CEO). When he comes out, he's holding his neck that covered in blood. Poor guy was stabbed in the neck with a letter opener. CBI is on the case!
Turns out, the dead guy planned a coup to oust his dad from leadership and take over. Dad was not happy about it so right away, we've got motive. But his wife turned off the security cameras so what could have been so much easier, isn't. Sigh.
If I understand correctly, and I might not, some cult is pissed off that the family (who runs a media conglomerate) is going to run as exposé on them and is threatening them. So, Jane and Lisbon head over to check it out. Jane is super excited to let the cult try to hook him in. He seriously answers all their questions and when it comes time to pay up, he just laughs and leaves. Once they leave, the assistant tells the leader they are gone (he told Jane and Lisbon the leader was out).
Lisbon heads back to talk to the family and while she's there, the dad gets a text about a bomb in the house. She ushers the family out and calls Jane for help diffusing is. He tells her to just leave, but the daughter wanders in and crawls under the couch so Lisbon has to figure it out or the both get blow up. Eventually, she just yanks all the wires and hopes for the best. Luckily, it disarms itself.
Next step is to see who had access to the room and they check in on one of the assistants. And she's got a signed book from the leader of the cult. Jane and Lisbon head back over to talk to him. He and Jane jaw at each other a little bit (I hope they get more scenes together in the future- any chance this guy actually is Red John?) and he finally tells them where to find the assistant.
When they get there, she's busy having sex with the other brother, the one dad is way less fond of than the dead one. They bring them both to the station, where the assistant starts acting weird as hell. She's convinced they are all inferior to her because the people in this cult are in a higher plane of existence. The brother, is just very confused. He doesn't really even seem to know what's going on.
However, while they are all there (this includes dad and his wife), Jane sends dad a text with the assistants phone (it's in evidence, I guess) to tell them that next time they won't be so lucky. So, we put the CBI team in the house as extra protection. And Jane's plan is in motion. He and Lisbon pretend they hear a noise in the study (where the murder took place), they go inside and while they find no people, Jane 'finds' the daughter's tea cup and suggests she saw the murder as she was in the room. Then, Grace tells them someone broke onto the property, so Lisbon rushes dad and daughter into a safe room.
Watching from cameras, we listen to him tell his daughter that it must have been scary to see the guy die. He claims it was an accident and he didn't mean to do it and she shouldn't be scared of him. That's all the confession we need. Cho, who is hiding in the room, pops out and handcuffs him.
Turns out, the dad suspected the daughter was his son's, so he got a paternity test. And found out she wasn't his. But, he accused his other son of it being his, and murdered him. However, it was actually the other's son's daughter. It's a very big soap opera-esque storyline this time.
At the end Stiles, the cult leader, hops in to demand an apology from Patrick, but neither he, nor the boss think one is really warranted. She reminds Patrick though, that at some point in the future, it will be.
