The Mentalist 2X19: Blood Money

Okay, so I'm not entirely sure where the Jane magic started in this episode. I have no idea if him picking the lock to go find the evidence in the apartment (when he left his prints on the mug) was part of the plan or just a rare accident on his part.

We start with Grace approaching some sketchy guy and telling him that she wants to have Rigsby killed. It's pretty obvious that this is a set up and she's not looking to have him killed, and we reset to 36 hours earlier.

There's a DA who was shot at point blank range so we set out to find the murderer. Jane and Lisbon head over to his house and talk with the husband who is distraught. During the conversation, the contractor (?) comes in and starts yapping with the husband. He's oblivious to the fact that he's standing in the DA's blood. When Patrick tells him he just shuffles over. No harm. I thought maybe he did it to have an excuse for the blood on his boots, but he's just a crazy pants.

Back at headquarters, Grace has discovered that this guy has changed his name a bunch of times and is constantly floating around whenever there is a murder. But, never been charged with anything. So Jane and Cho head over to stake out his apartment, during, Jane gets bored and hops out of the car. He never makes it back in and the next time we see him is at the station, but he won't give a straight answer about where he's been.

Now, he circle back to the beginning. We've got Grace trying to buy a hit on Rigsby while the rest of the team is watching on a monitor (along with Jane talking in her ear telling her what to say). When she asks for proof, he shows her the video of him murdering the DA. As soon as we see it, we all bust out and arrest him.

However, in court, it's revealed that when Jane hopped out of the car, he broke into the guy's house to find the evidence of him shooting the DA. And none of this evidence is admissible and the guy walks. Since Lisbon is responsible for Jane, she gets suspended for five days. She puts Cho in charge and leaves.

We find out that this killer guy has a murder house and we burst in and literally catch him in the act. While we're outside asking him who hired him, Rigsby notices a red dot on Cho and we all duck. But, the shooter manages to shoot and kill the murderer, so now we have no more information. Hasn't this happened to us before? Why are we so unlucky?

While all this is going on Jane and Lisbon went to talk to some smugglers (a case the dead DA was working on) and they end up kidnapping the two of them. They stick them in a shipping crate and haul it to Mexico (?). However, while they are waiting to be freed, Lisbon does say that she completely expects to get fired one day for Jane's antics, but she's accepted it.

Back in CA, we go to the court and Jane 'assaults' the lawyer by bopping him on the nose. So, he's thrown in jail. We bail him out (boo, no Jail Jane) and he starts reading up on how to be his own lawyer. On his day in court, he uses him time to put the lawyer on trial (basically) and gets the judge to agree that he's probably the guy who murdered the murderer. Turns out, he wanted the DA job and was resentful that the other lady got the job. So, he hired the murderer to kill him. But, when he was arrested, he killed him so he couldn't tell anyone that he hired him.

The boss is pleased and tells Lisbon she can come back to work. Oh, and that Jane owes $16,000 in court fees because of course he does. 🤣
