Hello Deathlings,
Let me take you back to the year 2020. Who can remember that far back? hahahahahahah weep
January of 2020 was a more innocent time, a time when we stated in our "Recreating 19th Century Death & Mourning Photographs" video that if the video got 75K likes, I'd pop on back to New York City and shoot a video about spirit photography with photographer extraordinaire Jolene Lupo. Friends, we've been planning this video for over two years.
After a few failed starts and plans that had to be cancelled we were all finally able to convene in Manhattan at Penumbra Foundation to conjure the spirits.
So...me. In a fast fashion white dress that I couldn't bear to part with after the shoot so now I wear it on vacations much to the chagrin of my friends and family.
From literally sun up to well past sun down, Jolene, her colleague Sam, the AAM team, and I spent hours carefully setting up shots, willing me to stay still, and exploring the magic behind the Mumler. At least, to the best of our ability.
That part in the video where Louise says, "I'm gonna go check on Caitlin," wasn't a bit. While the gang was partying in the darkroom, there were long stretches of time where I sat in the studio all alone with the brace against my head so we didn't lose my exact position for the next shot. It was meditative. The brace actually felt great – just the right pressure points. I miss it.
By the end of the night we were all a little loopy but happy. I couldn't ask for a better bunch of death & photography nerds to spend my day with. I hope you have fun with us too.
And we loved Jolene's photos so much that we worked with her to create two items for my SECRET Shop: a set of notecards featuring the Mumler-style photos and limited edition Sir David Brewster-style stereoscopic card and viewer. Check 'em out!
Thanks for sticking with us on this photography adventure! If this video gets 300K likes, I will go cave diving with whale ghosts and Jolene will photograph it.
I AM KIDDING. KIDDING.

*A quick, but important clarification: If you clicked on this post from your email, the subject probably read, "Caitlin Doughty's new patron-only video". This is not a patron-only video; this is a video that was released to the public. When we release patron-only videos we will explicitly state in the video info and in the video post that it is a "Patron Exclusive" video. Patreon recently changed the way Patrons-only video posts (i.e. these nifty messages that are delivered to your inbox) are released via email – automatically adding that "patron-only video" line to the subject, even if that's not the case. But that's not how we (and a lot of other creators) do things. So, sorry for the confusion! I hope this cleared things up! We're working on fixing this with Patreon.
