Well, I don't think there is any goodness left in Clay. I think Gemma said it best when she told Unser he can't be saved.
So Clay empties the safe and uses the money to pay the hit man to kill Tara. He says it needs to be clean. Later, he finds out that Jax and boys are with her and tries to call it off, but he was warned, once it's in motion there is no going back. This was a lie though, as soon as he hangs up the phone, they call and tell him that Jax and boys are there and to just be careful.
They were not careful enough. They grab Tara while she's putting the boys in the car and pull her into a van. Jax chases after them and shoots at the van. Inside, Tara is biting and clawing at her attackers. In the process her hand gets smashed in the door. Eventually, Jax manages to catch up and save her, but her hand is in bad shape.
At the hospital, Clay acts like he had no idea who could have done with, and then goes with it when Jax (I think it was Jax) guesses it was Lobo retaliation. Clay goes to meet with the Galindos to see what can be done. Really, he's just pissed that they fucked up the hit. They apologize, give back the money, but claim they still need to take her out since she knows too much and she's a liability.
Back at the house, Gemma finally confronts Clay. She's pissed that he lied to her and went after Tara when he promised he wouldn't. He calls her crazy and tells her she has no idea what she's talking about. But Gemma is not stupid. She pulls a gun on him and tells him to stay away from her family. He doesn't think she's gonna shoot him (I didn't think she would either), but she shoots. I'm not sure if she missed on purpose though or she's just a lousy shot. Either way, when she misses, Clay charges her and beats the hell out of her.
Later, she calls Unser and when he gets there, she tells him Clay can't be saved. Unser offer to put Piney's death back on him, but she claimed he's got to be killed by a son. I don't know if that's a reference to Jax himself, or just someone in the club. My gut is telling me that she's gonna find the letters, have Jax read them and hope that he kills Clay? I mean, she and Tara have talked about being concerned that Jax would kill Clay if he read the letters. I can totally see Gemma using that to her advantage.
Oh, also Jax tells Opie that he's getting out. He apologizes and tells him he was wrong for trying to keep Opie in earlier when he wanted out. It's actually really sweet.
And then there's Tara. Tara and her poor messed up hand which means she can probably no longer perform surgery. So now she's in Charming and an old lady for life. It was so sad to hear her just be so resigned about it. I mean, I get it. But I'm used to her being fairly strong. I hate this for her.
