One Tree Hill 8X6: Not Afraid

This was not my favorite episode. And I usually love a good Halloween episode, but it kind of felt like not that much happened.

So, Julian's mom shows up unexpectedly and Brooke really tries to bond with her. But I cannot get a read on her. I have no idea when she's kidding, serious, or sarcastic. But she agrees to pay for their wedding. However, soon after, she starts telling Brooke about all the things she'll have to change since she's paying now.

Nathan takes Jamie and his friends trick or treating. Can we please get rid of Chuck? I cannot watch his anymore.

While Nathan's out with Jamie, Haley and Brooke got shopping for Halloween costumes for themselves, Nathan, and Julian. Brooke, who knows Julian hates Halloween, has decided on a couple's costume of A Clockwork Orange. It's one of his favorite movies and all he'll need to do is walk around a hold a clock. She's going to be an orange. Haley is going as a pregnant cheerleader (herself in high school), and I think Nathan is supposed to be a guy from Mad Men? I'm not really sure.

But, when Brooke gets home with their costumes, we find out that Julian is dressed like a Dalmatian. And his mom comes down the stairs as Cruella DeVille. Brooke says she thought he hated Halloween and he was all, 'Now you see why.' Poor Julian. He looks miserable.

Quinn is really having a hard time being at the beach house. She's not sleeping and is having terrible nightmares. When there are trick or treaters at the door, she thinks she sees fake Sara on the video camera and freaks out and shuts the door on them. Later, when they lose power, Clay goes in search of a flashlight and finds the gun she purchased. They decide that she's going to South America to do a photo spread; she got to get out of Tree Hill for a bit. Also, why are we not looking for Katie? Did we just give up? Did we every even start? We know exactly who we are looking for, she shouldn't be that hard to find.

Also, one of the women who calls and talks to Haley often at the crisis center turns out to be someone at open mic night. I wonder if Haley is going to tell her she knows who she is, or if it's better to remain anonymous.

And Millie and Mouth are playing who can be more casual. I so do not care.

Yes, this was not the most exciting OTH episode ever, but I enjoyed most of it for what it was. I'm glad that we continue to get a look in at Nathan being okay with his retirement from the NBA because it was on his terms as opposed to his back injury during S5. And it's a trade-off, because while healthy, I'm sure that he'd still love to be playing, but if he was playing, then he'd also be missing out on a lot of family time like taking Jamie trick-or-treating, which he was thrilled to be able to do this year, so his feelings are not in a vacuum. He's struggling with what to do next, while at the same time, beyond happy that he's home with his family and not missing out on important milestones. Even though it was tame, and no real drama, it was still nice to see everyone dressed up at Tric for Halloween, and yes Brooke as that adorable orange was beyond cute, and I laughed out loud at Julian the Dalmatian and his mother Cruella de Vil, lol. So damn funny, hehe. We also were introduced to Sylvia....who appears to have somewhat of a drinking problem, and we get some insight into the dysfunction that Julian grew up in. We already know about the relationship between him and his dad Paul, and so now we get to see the dynamic between him and his mother, which is most definitely intriguing. Especially considering she wants to take over all the wedding planning, lol. And Clay and Quinn are still struggling both separately with their trauma and recovery, and we'll see if Quinn going away to South Africa is going to help her or not? Thought it was funny that Naley hated those cute couple costumes, lol, so Haley picked out a Mad Men outfit for Nathan (too perfect because James so rocks a suit, hehe) and Haley went as herself in high school (a pregnant cheerleader, lol). Julian not being able to high five will never not be funny, lol, and I adored that Naley scene at the end with Jamie passed out on the floor with his bag of candy, and Nathan rewatching his final four game between Maryland and Duke because Troy Jameson (the Arkansas QB who is holding out) told him that if he ever needed a reminder of how great he was, that's the game to watch. So, Haley coming in to sit down with him to quiz him about his choice, was so poignant when Nathan reveals that he wonders if he'll ever find something to be great at again? And Haley reassures him that she's not worried about that with him. When she tells him to turn it up...let's finish the game, and Nathan replies with we already know how it ends, and Haley says, the game, not the rest of it.... that just about sums things up perfectly for Nathan and his family, and I couldn't love it more. That scene between Naley was everything. James and Joy owned it big time!!!
