I'm not really sure what is happening in a ton of instances.
Here's what I get: the lab people are concerned with foreign nations having access to The Upsidedown; they are somehow able to cauterize (or similar) it to keep it from growing; Dart is growing and for whatever reason, they think it's a key to figuring out what's wrong with Will.
Questions I have: how does Will's tunnel system relate to the pumpkins?; Nancy recorded the scientist says the old members were gone- so what- we're still doing fucked up shit, right?; what is douchebag's issue with Lucas- is it just because he's Black?; why is the lab still around?; and why are Joyce and Hopper allowing it?
Other things to note: I get both Hopper and El's side of this argument. But, ultimately, as an adult, I side with Hopper. However, I don't think El is unjustified in her feelings. I have no idea what Hopper was digging up. Parts of the Upsidedown? Weird mud quicksand? Something else entirely?
I love that Joyce has Hopper to confide in. Without him, she would totally be spiraling. I don't know if what she is doing is right, but she's doing the best she can as a parent.
