Happy Pride! Pride (2014)

So, I didn't even know this movie existed until Kayden suggested it. And I'm glad they did! I was lovely (but, you know, also terrible).

Since watching I may have done some Wikipedia-ing about this movie (you guys know my knowledge of history is tragic), and it turns out Jonathan is still alive in 2024. Also, it seems like Mark was heavily into the communist scene and they left that out of the plot of the movie, because they thought it would alienate audiences. Okay, but if it's based on real people, tell me about the people!

Siân is a god damn delight. I didn't put it together until later that it was a bunch of miners that got arrested and after Jonathan explained the law to her, went down the police station and demanded their release. And it worked!

As per usual, I really thought I was gonna be able to make it through without crying, but when the miners showed up at the Gay Pride parade I lost it. Why can't we just be nice to each other from the start?

I'm really glad you liked the film. I haven't got time to watch the reaction fully until tomorrow but I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to some of my favourite scenes. Unfortunately the reason they were vague about Mark (and other members of LGSM) being communists is because US distributors said they wouldn't distribute the film in America if it was made clear. instead it was just left with things like the Communist flag in Marks flat, someone shouting out Commie in the gay bar and the red stars on his collar as little hints. the director wanted this film to be seen by as many people as possible and having American distributors not allow it to be seen would be a really bad thing for total views of the film. Some interesting things you might like to know, one of the men in the book shop towards the beginning of the film who spoke about how the miners used to beat him up on the way to school and on the way home and then walked out is an actor called Dean Ashton who is the real Mark Ashton's cousin. Also in both the Pits and Perverts Concert Scene and the end Scene where they are marching across the bridge (behind Andrew Scott and Dominic West) some of the real members of LGSM are there with the cast. There is a book by Tim Tate called Pride: The Unlikely Story of the True Heroes of the Miner's Strike which tells stories from both LGSM and the miners and some of the things that happened during the strike i wish they could have added to the film, but if they told everything it would end up being at least 6 hours long.
