One Tree Hill 2X17: Something I Can Never Have

Was I the only one rooting for murder? Why did those employees have to drag Keith off of Dan? How has he not had multiple attempts on his life? Are you guys tired of my hatred of him yet?

This was so not the reunion I was hoping for with Nathan and Haley. It's probably fairly realistic, though. But that doesn't make it any more enjoyable to watch.

Is Felix really gone? Fingers crossed.

Also, I really don't care about Jake and his custody. I don't know if it's because I hate Nikki or if it's just because we shouldn't be getting a custody battle between two high schoolers. (Assuming Nikki is actually in high school. I don't know if she is- considering she called Jake out on the fact that he hasn't finished high school).

Besides hurting Nathan even more, I don't get the issue with what Haley said to Nathan here. She said what we've seen from her actions all season. This was the first time she was honest about it. She wasn't trying to hurt him intentionally. In fact, she probably hasn't said this because she didn't want to to hurt him. We can talk more about it later cuz I can't think of what you mean by this. If the writing is inconsistent then that says more about later than what's going on now. To me everything falls under her questioning that maybe she made a mistake by rushing into her marriage with Nathan, which is what she basically said here. That said, deep down I don't think she thinks she made a mistake, but to her, rushing into marriage doesn't make sense, so on some level she does, so she constantly questions and justifies why it is, hence the back and forth. Also, adding music/her dream to the equation makes everything more confusing. At the end of the day, what really are her options? Stay married or get a divorce. (There's not really an in-between.) At the moment she doesn't seem to want either of those. Last epi she was asking him what she could do to make things better, leaning more towards fixing her marriage and this epi she was implying she was done, leaning more towards ending her marriage.

See I'm also thinking about future things that take place on the show as well and that also doesn't add up to what she says to Nathan in this episode. It's all very she says one thing one day and the next it's completely different. I would give more details, but don't want to spoil anything. But I understand the whole thing with them getting married very early and that can obviously cause problems. I think the writing is my issue. It's not consistent. And again I would love to go into further detail, but don't want to give spoilers.

Haley needs to figure things out with her marriage and her music. (She told Nathan a couple of epis ago when she called him that she needed to figure things out. Nathan not understanding said, "If we love each other what's to figure out?") If she now knew exactly what she wanted she would not have been so conflicted in that interview, in the last episode. According to her manager, or whoever that guy was, marriage did not fit into the rock star lifestyle. She started pushing back on it a little, by saying Nathan mattered and by stating her married name, but she ultimately ended up covering up her ring and not contradicting Chris when he alluded to them being a couple. I always felt Haley needed to figure things out on her own, without him. Nathan deciding he was going to bring her home or deciding to leave school and join her was not the space she needed to do this. Maybe living her dream without him would give her clarity one way or the other. I always got the impression that she thought that MAYBE they made a mistake (but she couldn't express that to him), so her finally telling him that, definitely didn't feel out of nowhere to me. Just because she maybe thinks they made a mistake doesn't mean that's what she definitively thinks. It's all maybe at this point. There's going to be waffling. She feels one way about it now, but that doesn't mean she couldn't have felt differently last week or still feel differently next week. She did want to further the discussion after the show, but he left after feeling hurt and rejected. To me, it is not just about prolonged fighting for the sake of drama. Rushing into marriage is what got them here in the first place. Their whole relationship has been rushed. Their marriage in trouble has added angst and made them more rootable, imo The last shot of them was Haley placing her guitar over her ring (great symbolism) and Nathan taking off his ring. Up until now, it's been fighting, lying and figuring things out. With him taking off his ring it feels like we've entered into another stage in this storyline.

I will never understand Haley's reaction to Nathan in this episode because the last episode she still wanted things to work out and was wanting his support. He finally shows up and tells her he'll be there no matter what and she basically rejects him. It felt so out of nowhere and like the writers purposely wanted to prolong their "fighting". So aggravating lol but there was also some behind the scenes stuff with the creator and Joy Lenz (Haley) and the reason she's not on the show as much this season but I don't want to give anything away accidentally. They discuss it on their rewatch podcast Drama Queens.

Amy

Oh, that's hysterical. She just stuck out so much to me! Also, I love that that used to be a thing. I don't ever hear about that happening anymore.

Thank you! My mouth seems to move faster than my brain. Lol. OMG. I was literally blindsided by the lack of Haley and Nathan getting back together. I was 100% sure that's what I was getting. It killed me. I love how well this show is written. In less than two seasons, they made me LOVE and root for two characters that I'd basically written off. I spend way too much time trying to imagine scenarios in which Dan could possibly redeem himself. I haven't come up with any yet. Ha. It's going so fast! I guess when you watch 3 days a week, it'll do that. Lots of people have mentioned S3 being their favorite, so I'm super excited for it!

Dana Licciardello

OMG, really?!? I had no idea all that happened in 6 months! That's crazy! Yeah, I'm not really into the Jake/Nikki stuff, but there is so much else to love that it's pretty easy to ignore. Thank you! It's nice to have an outlet for my rambling. I'm so excited. I cannot even guess how this season is going to end. I'm rooting for a Haley and Nathan reconciliation, happiness for Keith, and the death of Dan. Lol.

Dana Licciardello

Great reaction! I’m pretty sure the random girl Brooke talked to who was looking at her house was someone who had won a contest to make an appearance on OTH. So, definitely not an actress, lol.

Kelsey

I love your reactions to this show...and your ramblings make my day, so never apologize, hehe. It's always so refreshing seeing new fans all these years later, and your heart breaking over the non Naley reunion here was basically all of us like 20 years ago, lol. I also love how your now fully entrenched on team Naley and team Brooke, hehe. Said pretty much every OTH fan ever so welcome to the club, lol. And Dan is definitely everyone's favorite character to hate and I love your musings about him. He's about one of the most complex characters I can ever remember on any show, not just this one. It's amazing how many stories and parallels filter through his character. So keep on loving to hate him, hehe. I just want so badly for you to hurry up and get through the rest of S2 so you can get to S3, lol. It'll be a favorite...I have no doubt. But I shouldn't wish S2 away quite yet because there are some immense important things that still have to happen, so keep watching and enjoying the show, and I'll so be here for your thoughts and reactions!!!

Season 1 and 2 is their junior year, 1st and 2nd semester, so at this point Nathan and Haley have only known each other for about 6 months and in that time she tutored him, they dated, they got married and she left for tour. So they've only been married about 2 months. Nikki is older than Jake by a couple of yrs. She's about 19. I think they mentioned it in season 1, but I don't pay that much attention to their storyline, so I don't remember when. I vaguely recall her saying something about her friends going off to college. I'm LOVING your reactions! Please never stop the "ramblings" at the end. I can't believe we're 2 weeks away from season 3.
