VIDEO: Why does the US spend so much on its military?

Hi friends -

We learned a lot more about government accounting systems than we planned on for this piece. Turns out how much a government agency spends in a year depends a lot on who you ask, when you’re asking, and what definition of “spend” you’re using.

As always, check our sources document to understand some of the choices we made to answer those questions, and I hope you enjoy.

I think this video needs a redo or a part two because it comes to light that the research was only skin deep, is that possible?

also.. is it really in our best interest to sell the F-35 to Turkey? ..isn't there proprietary technology that they might want to sell abroad?

Hey Johnny.. I was wondering about the case for the US government spending money overseas.. both on aid, and on military bases and such.. it seems a lot of people don't see the point. For instance, do we need to keep the Suez canal open? Is it in our interest to defend the Baltic states from Russia? (..or is it even possible?) ..and why are we reliant on Taiwan for microchips?

Martin Griffith

Love that ending. Are we safer? Healthier? Mentally and physically? Can we spend our taxes better? And can increased focus on diplomacy be a more cost-effective way to create (and model) peace around the world? But there's the damned incentive structure... nobody gets rich practicing diplomacy. Much more easily electable to create jobs, building bombs and planes in factories all around the country. How do we change the incentives? And that revolving door? The military industrial complex? Similar question around common sense gun control measures? Feels a bit like a lost cause. Esp when half the country just wants to "own the libs."

Johnny really hones it down gets to the core issues in a very well produced engrossing video

Amazing! insightful and interesting condensed analysis of the mentality behind how 50% of the US discretionary budget is spent.
