The challenge for this piece was that I wanted the scene to appear strongly lit from below. So as usual I decided to paint the surroundings first before turning my attention to the characters in the scene.
Because I knew this would be a challenge, I started from the foreground bar and then worked backwards trying to pay as much attention as I could to the light direction and upward cast shadows.
From there I decided to keep the enslaved figures above the bar shiny and white (a nod to the inspiration of the Korova Milk Bar in A Clockwork Orange.)
As ever, I painted the parts I confidently knew what their colours would be (basically the flesh of the characters) and then layered in the coloured lighting in the final image (greenish shades in the background with a subtle up lit purple in the foreground.)
