Here are the iterations along the way in this painting.
I was asked to paint something like 'Queen Takes Pawn' and decided to really push the perspective to create a more expansive scene and include more characters.
Major changes along the way were to make the background characters male, not female (I love the female form so instinctively make all my characters feminine) and tweaks and refinements to Mistress Lacy herself, because, well, drawing at that angle is kind tricky.
After the initial sketches I did a lot more digging and found better reference for the Mistress herself so reworked her expression to make her look more confident and sassy.
As for painting - I devoted a single day to dive in and paint the whole work in one go, making a few tiny adjustments for the client at the end, notably fixing the hooves on the left-hand pony as I had completely forgotten to include them despite having spent many hours checking and referring to reference on the actual costumes.
