In her career and personal life she is as respected as she is feared. She's also deeply bored. Liv doesn't know how to have friendships that aren't shallow and transactional, and she has a deep-rooted discomfort around intimacy and vulnerability (her sham marriage with Felix murdered her belief in romance). So Liv is lonely, and she's bored. So Merry makes for a VERY entertaining- and very welcome- new toy. He's so reactive! Liv can bully him, bite him, bait him into arguments, undermine his beliefs...yet he keeps coming back for more. Liv can sexually dominate and humiliate him, turn his antiquated patriarchal expectations about relationships upside down, make that proud man get on his knees and BEG....and still, he comes back for more. She can make him wear a leash, sit in his lap and "use" him for her pleasure, give him orders, not permit him to get off....and Merry LOVES it. Not only does he work hard to please her, his pathetic need for praise means he'll prioritize her pleasure and satisfaction above his own. Liv spent a decade in a marriage to a disinterested and depressed gay man, then after Felix died she only ever had mediocre sex with dull divorcees who largely viewed her as an object to get off in. She's not used to sex that's actually...good. Merry inflates Liv's ego, makes her feel powerful, desired, needed. She's permitted total control, and Liv LOVES being in control. Although she feigns indifference, she's as hooked on their situationship as Merry is. Besides the sex, in her weaker moments, Liv might just feel....comforted, in having another fuck-up of a parent around. Someone else who crashed and burned at the marriage and kids route. Maybe it's nice to have somebody around to commiserate with, or to snap at waitstaff together. Maybe she likes knowing that Merry will always (rather pathetically, in her opinion) pick up the phone, no matter what time she calls. Maybe it's nice to be touched, to be known, to be explored, to be truly and honestly SEEN- by someone who will not flinch away at the experience.

The Husband grew up with a lot of poverty, abuse, and machismo (Latino culture) and his reaction as a preteen was to run in the opposite direction as far as he could go. Like - this is a man who experimented, found out he can't stand the smell of other men, and was subsequently dismayed that he couldn't rub being a big ol gay in his family's faces. Merry could have had it all, but having to acknowledge that he was wrong - that being a big strong man (or not) doesn't dictate someone's value - was just too frightening to consider. He knows that for a fact, because when he was in college and his friends were all starting to experiment, Merry got dared to make out with a male friend at a party. As he was a lot more flexible back then, he tried it....and felt nothing, besides a vague sense of disgust and shame. He laughed it all off at the time. In psychological terms, Merry's head is all kinds of jacked up from his traumatic upbringing. Merry may come off as a massive malignant narcissist, but at at his core he's like 80% self loathing. Growing up, Merry was brutalized regularly by his father whenever he exhibited weakness or softness or god forbid, "femininity"- so he hardened himself into the shape of a "real man", and came to hate the parts of himself he viewed as weak....which is most of him. Part of the reason Merry struggles to love Toffee is because Toffee's sweetness and sensitivity remind him of his youthful self- the parts his father tried to kill- and it's genuinely painful for Merry to engage with that. So he pushes his son away. Back to sexuality. Merry is not only unattracted to men, he is suspicious and threatened by them. Because subconsciously, they remind him of himself....as well as his father. He genuinely doesn't understand WHY Toffee, or anyone, would want to be with a man. He definitely doesn't understand why anyone would want to be with him. With Eleanor, he was able to combat these feelings with the comfort of her love and the knowledge he was young, fit, and successful. Later on, though...with Maple, he's considerably emotionally distant to her, and even comes to struggle with sexual dysfunction. Her eyes perceiving him and his body-his aging, frail, balding, flabby body- fills him with shame and disgust, and he comes to have such a tough time getting an erection that in the end, their bedroom is completely dead. This of course only makes him feel MORE ashamed, pathetic, less of a man, etc- and he becomes sharper and snappier in his day to day life to overcompensate. ...And then along comes Liv. Liv takes Merry's deep-seeded sense of shame and runs with it, twisting it into something perverse and delicious. Getting pegged turns Merry on because 1.) feels gud 2.) He views it as obscenely degrading. Bonus points for having it done to him by his "lesser", a woman. With Liv Merry is unknowingly given a place to not only access his feelings of shame, but to REVEL in them, and ultimately it becomes empowering. Because for the first time, he is consenting to being degraded, it's all on Merry's terms. To finally be permitted to be so vulnerable in an intimate space is....well, as we can see, pretty mind-blowing for the good reverend. In a perfect world, Merry would come to understand that he doesn't need to live a life dictated by shame. He could embrace humility and extend himself patience and compassion. And then he could extend it to his children. He doesn't, of course. I wish I could tell you that Merry reflects on this experience and becomes more open-minded about sexuality, and by proxy, his son's homosexuality, but Merry simply comes to view BOTH his and Toffee's respective sexual tastes as shameful and depraved. 🙃 Merry leaves his time with Liv feeling disgusted with himself- ashamed and embarrassed over how much he enjoyed it- and every time he swears he'll NEVER do it again. Rather than acknowledge he's just a guy that really likes getting topped by a mean cat lady, he convinces himself he's a good, godly man that keeps getting seduced by that nasty old minx. (Deeply untrue, Merry begs for it sometimes). If anything, Merry probably comes out of this with an even lower opinion of Toffee, because at least Merry enjoys this twisted act with a beautiful woman. It's just a...cheap thrill, is all. Toffee is doing it with a hulking hairy MAN, which is not only perverse and degrading but wildly unnatural to boot! Toffee also has the gall not to act even a little ashamed of his degeneracy, which makes it unforgivable in Merry's eyes. If Merry doesn't get to be happy, his (*insert slur here*) of a son doesn't either. In fact, nobody does. (tldr: merry is het and a hypocrite)

Fun fact: Merry's old creaky knees (and Liv's back) definitely started aching after like a minute of that position, which is why they're both laying down in the next panel. Drawing these two idiots ate up most of my weekend but I could've literally drawn them for dayssss, like here's some thumbnailed panels that got cut/never made it off the ground: -Liv being unexpectedly charmed by Merry's traditional values and old-school chivalry, before abruptly realizing he's just massively sexist -Them having an awkward cringe first kiss, Liv thinks he smells like wet dog, Merry thinks she tastes like an ashtray. Cut to them later shamelessly sloppily making out -Merry grumbling that "nobody likes a high-minded woman" while Liv smugly sits in his lap grinding against his erection "Oh, I think YOU do~" -Liv dominance-grooming Merry/mlemming his bald head -Merry thinking back on sex with Eleanor (good) vs Maple (bad) vs Liv (good GOD almighty) -Merry unable to move post-sex because Liv fucked him into an arthritis flare-up -Merry on his knees, wrists and muzzle bound with stylish pink ribbon -Liv smirking as she licks her lips (Merry came on her face and breasts) -Post-sex, they're both dazed and worn-out, Merry turns and groggily asks if Liv wants to go steady or something, Liv tiredly says she'd rather die

They look like real people having a good time. They don't look like horrifying models that barely look real. They have wrinkles and stretch marks. Merry isn't jacked to hell amd back. He's thin and even a teeny bit fragile looking. Liv looks like a mafioso wife and she looks human. Thank you for making realistic body types with explicit drawings. It's a wonderful breath of fresh air. (Side note - I am in love with this crackship (i dont know why my phone changed it to tracksuit) It's so fucked, but so good. Liv is everything Merry "dislikes" [cough cough] in a woman)
