1.) Mal doesn’t emote much with her face, just like a real life big cat. Her body betrays her true feelings, however, which is how Topher is able to read her so well. Pinned back ears = annoyed, puffed up tail = anxious, lashing tail = irritated and/or horny, claws out= contemplating maiming you.
2.) happy bonding times with Mal and her sorta-father-in-law. Merry may be top dog in his neck of the woods, but Mal is a very big cat.
3.) happy bonding times with Mal and Honey, who are definitely besties if Honey is to be believed

I can see her being outraged upon learning Mal and Topher are not "just roommates" and attempting to go to war with Topher over Mal, probably saying Mal is too good for Topher and that if he doesn't watch his back, Honey might just steal her. The Husband and I already talk about how I don't know if I'm properly on the spectrum, or if it's the way I was raised. (Joke's on me, the DSM is a descriptive diagnostic tool, not an etiological one. It doesn't identify a root cause of a disorder, just provides a description of what the disorder should look like. There's problems with this! But the joke is that it doesn't matter if you had Autism (tm) genes or if you were raised a certain way, if you meet the criteria then you have the tisms) Anyway, strong solidarity to the "I barely emote with my face." I've learned to over-emote in certain settings, but dang, it feels like it would be easier if I had more obvious markers like a tail...then again, it hasn't helped Mal any. Also strong "arrogant prick" solidarity. The Husband told me early on that I come off as arrogant - he's explained that my systemic way of thinking + knowledge base = a lot of strongly-grounded opinions which I will happily debate about and assume other people will come to the conversation with similarly thought-out arguments...Aaaaand that's why I had to figure out how to not overwhelm people! I do wonder if Mal's "arrogant prick" vibes are similar, or if she's an arrogant prick in an entirely different way... Also *also* reminds me of a friend telling me her mom found me off-putting and weird at first, but then realized that I was actually pretty helpful and considerate so then liked me a lot. 🤷♀️ *Also* also also, this update in general warms my lil dumb heart. I hope she's still a pillar of her community, still volunteers and cares for others, that Toffee still teases Topher to marry/commitment ceremony this woman, and that she does it all with zero fucking expression on her face.

He wasn't aiming to do anything besides take out his contempt on an acceptable target, though I'm sure he convinced himself he was actually aiming to show Mal the error of her ways and get her crying and begging forgiveness. Merry is used to stepping into the ring with his own kids, who are all quite easy to defeat. Toffee is often too spineless to stand up to his dad, Topher will only curse Merry out and storm off (thus "losing" the argument, in Merry's mind), and Honey is still young and loyal enough that Merry can pressure her into dropping whatever issues she brings to him. He expected Mal to be a pushover. He taunts her, but she doesn't seem to react, so he pushes harder, hoping to provoke an emotional outburst.

Like I'm 31 and I work with people in their 40s-60s, I wanna tell stories about my own lived experiences. I wanna draw older imperfect bodies with flab and wrinkles and greying hairs. I like character arcs that stretch out over lifetimes. Topher for example is different in his teens than he is in his twenties than he is in his thirties than he is in his forties and so on. Why leave all that potential storytelling out? Life doesn't stop once you hit 30 and this should be reflected in fiction. >:3

Upon being grabbed Merry probably struggled and clawed at her hand and wheezed about calling the cops, to which Mal responded by squeezing him even tighter. And so, Merry gets the picture. Mal is not afraid of him and cannot be pushed around, at least not in the way he's used to pushing people around. Furthermore he's pretty rattled and humiliated by the encounter and doesn't exactly feel up to telling anybody, lest of all having it in an official police report, that he got ragdolled by his son's roommate so hard he pissed himself a little bit

For me religion never really clicked despite being born and raised in the southern Baptist faith. I just Masked (tho I didn't know what that was or the fact I am autistic) the entire time and did what people and my family expected of me. I always questioned everything in church, annoyed my youth leaders with hard questions, and generally was always with church and the Bible "...wait that doesn't sound right." Plus life at home wasn't fun either. But I'm better now and can actively go to museums and do stuff to satisfy my scientific brain.

Eventually something clicked in my brain and I slowly changed my ways into more open-minded understanding and thinking "why do people different from me make me mad? They don't effect me at all and they're just living happily and all this anger is making me internally miserable." Then, tada, found out I was asexual, COULD be slightly attracted to gal pals of mine and I'm genderfluid and relish in the lovely feelings of presenting female, male, both and neither! Older. So much queer media (and media in general tbh) focuses on younger characters in their 20s at the most, and there's nothing wrong with that! But I really appreciate Mal's transformation being shown between the ages of 29 and 37. I'm only 24 which ik is still Quite young but I've had a lot of fears around wasting my youth lately.
