Holly - Halloween Witch

It tends to happen! I used to change my TV config a lot back when I used to play videogames regularly. Some looked good one way and others required adjustments whenever I played them. It can be real hassle. But in any case, I guess I just offered a long answer because I felt you were somewhat curious about the whole process of picking colors for a picture. Hope it was at least, interesting XD

Thank you for the responses. I'm no artist. I'm more familiar with writing than art but you gave me more than I asked for, you gave me something to think about and not just story this time. Ain't that where the phrase "a pictures worth a thousand words" comes in? not exactly but yeah, I'm glad you take prudent and pragmatic steps. Thats a real workshop. I'll end this with this; I HAVE changed a few color settings on my monitor so please don't take anything I said about color into any kind of consideration. This picture looks great to me with my monitors color "mode" off which is very unusual but when I switch my monitor's color "mode" that I normally use to make colors more vibrant this picture actually looks really bad so my settings need tweaked. I should make another mode for viewing color comics. If you're wandering my monitor is a cheapo AOC CQ27G2 that I've set to have darker black ranges and to boost red/green slightly because of deuteranomaly. tl;dr cheapo monitor only shows LIES

In regard to the screen visualization, I have configured the only two screens I have available to the most used (default) configuration in screens, which is RGB plus a number of setting like brightness, color, etc. to ensure I can look at the majority of potential issues that could arise. It would be incredibly slow and cumbersome to try to check on every brand of monitor to see how it looks in it, besides of it being super expensive to buy monitors of different brands. In some cases, when I have doubts of how a specific piece looks, I also check how the image looks in my smartphone and my wife's, but that's probably about it. Aside of that, yes, I do try to ensure that every piece looks good in the screens I have available and release like that. When it comes to have a piece that's meant to be printed, that adds a number of layers of complexity, in which you can't even trust on how they look on screen (RGB to CMYK) and have to depend on how the graphic software emulates printed colors and hope for the best when sending the files for print. So far, that system has hardly failed me because I try to keep my screens correctly balanced all the time. Maybe each piece will look different in every monitor, but at least I'm trying to ensure that the color harmony remains.

Maybe the very tight color scheme that I used for this piece makes it look like the color palette is restricted and hence, makes it feel like a printed piece from a carboard box or a t-shirt. Not my original intention, but a happy coincidence. I do try to aim for different predominant color schemes in every piece whenever I can. Another example is this Elle picture where the predominant color is green: https://www.patreon.com/posts/elle-in-spirit-112808970 Sometimes that's intentional and sometimes it's just something that happens while working on a piece. At least in my case, not everything is planned and sometimes the piece surprises me.

Well, there's a couple of completely independent subjects you are including in your question. I'll talk just about the way I do things, it's very likely other artists approach the same subjects in a different way! A color palette is a group of individual colors (combination of tone, hue and value) that an artist picks previous to starting coloring a piece to ensure there's a harmony between them. I don't usually pick color palettes previous to coloring, but I always end up adjusting the colors AFTER I'm done coloring. Which means adding filters on top of the finished picture. That to ensure that there's a predominant color or colors in the picture. In this halloween Holly case I went for strong purple and orange with some white and black. Since this feels like a color palette with a small number of colors, (specifically purple and orange) it can give the sense of an old printed piece, because in printed pieces, you need to restrict your palette of colors to what the printer allows you as the artist. An example of that are the enamel pins I designed a couple of years ago that were restricted to 6 colors: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/51994126/

This picture is.. peculiar. Just the colors but I like them. They're like a decal on an old shirt or color pages from on old comic book. A very pleasant aesthetic IMO. This is mostly my monitors' goofy color temp/environment settings, I'm sure (my monitor does wash-out colors by default) but it begs the question of how artists deal with the perception of their arts' colors from the palette they use versus many different types of monitors/phones/displays? Is it a non-issue or just "fuck it, who cares. Looks good to me ~ the artist". Well I do care. Did you use a different palette?

Holly is really too beautiful, what a pretty expression on her face. And all her details on the characters and the clothes (even Mocha and Jen are superbly detailed) great work Deer :)

I suppose I can ignore the little decore on the pumpkin tops because Holly, sweet Holly, is too cute and adorable. She has to be the cutest witch for sure. I wonder though with alts can the Mocha and Jen thing be removed? Just an idea to try but of course, up to you ABD.
