We are HERE! I'm excited to get through this season of The Wire. This has been something deeper than I ever could have imagined in the best of ways. Instantly rising to the top of shows I've watched in my life..let alone stories..let's get to it!

McNulty's look towards Templeton after he says "He made another call?" is what made this season click for me. Like, oh! It's a satire. That's what they're doing. Excellent.

Martin Heron

You asked how Baltimore let the show live, the mayor and other elected officials were proud of the show and the spotlight it shone on their city...until Season Three when they started covering politics. Then they said the show wasn't realistic and they didn't like it so much anymore lol. You can honestly say the same about TV critics and how their perspective shifted with this season when Simon decided to focus on problems within the media.

I think the core of season 5 is David Simon unleashing his frustration upon his former profession, as he was a crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun for over a decade. It's a criticism of the media's obsession with sensationalism, while ignoring the real social problems that affect many more people. Gus Haynes is basically Simon's self-insert, and I'm certain that Templeton is based upon actual reporters he knew. It's frustrating to watch them all focusing on this fake serial killer story, and I think that's the point. Simon wants us to feel the frustration he felt with his former colleagues. That's my take, anyway.
