Hey James, just wanted to throw this out there. I know you have a lot of shows to react to, especially some very monumentally popular ones (like Sopranos). I think there is a show you would very much dig the vibe, existential and psychedelic nature of. I've mentioned it before, but I don't think it will ever win a poll for a reaction. So if you have time to watch it on your own (not for this channel), I think it's so up your alley. The title is Legion, a show by Noah Hawley (Fargo showrunner). It was on FX, so it should still be on Hulu. In any case, as much as I'd love to see a reaction binge of it, I submit if you have free time to watch it on your own (if you have that kind of time) you should definitely do so. It's a show that has gone pretty unseen, but it's so different from anything and so good that I'd rather people see it, even if I don't get to see the reaction to it. If you dont think that is a possibility, keep it in mind for future show reaction polls.... Legion from Noah Hawley, Hulu/FX. Peace โœŒ๐Ÿป

There's a really good nuance to this, where Truman puts on a fake act and goofy character to everyone throughout his life. It mirrors how fake the people in his life are. My favorite part about this movie is the end scene, realization for Truman when he touches the wall of his cage at the end. The entire movie there are so many spy cameras jammed in Truman's face from so many angles, but when he reaches a genuine moment, the most brutally honest moment of realization of how fake the world around him is, the camera only shows us his back as Truman, and Carrey as an actor, wallow in absolute grief and defeat. I've always thought the unspoken context of the camera placement in that moment withholds the audience (of the movie, not the characters watching Truman's show) from the facial expression of Truman's pain and by not seeing his face, but getting the pain of his body movement we empathize with Truman and are put in his place to feel the utter devastation instead of reacting to his facial output. There's a very meta vibe to that whole scene as a kind of epiphany of the artistry and context of the story that transposed the viewer into Truman's shoes. The whole concept of the story to me is a kind of metaphor for self-realization and actualization, in a sense becoming conscious of the greater world and our power and individual place in it. The visuals that follow this image of defeat are of Truman literally walking on water, like Jesus, talking to "god" then exiting his world into the greater glory of the next life. Contextually, I read the Christian mythos of Jesus as the ability for all humans to self actualize and claim their higher consciousness of individuality and choice I'm not religious, but the Christian story of Jesus has always struck me as a metaphor and representation of the enlightenment era and the individual realizing their greater being and purpose beyond the underpinning of identifying with the social status of the group they are born into. I look at the Truman Show as a similar kind of story about rising above the social trappings of class and hierarchy we are all born into and transcending into enlightenment of the self-identity and actualization. Sorry, wrote a paper on this movie in a media class in college and I love talking about the deeper meaning behind this movie, especially the fantastic imagery and emotional crescendo of Truman metaphorically reaching enlightenment at the end and how big the emotion swing of despair and defeat turns to triumph. Also, love the callback to his personal mask of character when Christof is hoping for him to give some greater meaning to the audience with his final words. Instead he leaves them with the persona of his cheesy catchphrase that he used throughout his life to deflect people from peering beyond the veil of his character. For a vaguely silly movie, it has incredibly deep undertones of nuanced meaning, that I don't think the movie gets enough credit for, though it's enduring popularity signals to me that people feel it on a subconscious level. It's great writing and showing, not telling that achieves this, in my opinion. Rant over
