The Wire EP 9 & 10 Early Uncut Access

The Wire is finally coming to the scene and I'm excited to get into this narrative. I'm genuinely already immersed within this world and it's characters and can't wait for the journey that's about to unfold. The writing, filmmaking, compositions etc, all remind me of what makes a GREAT show stand out from just a good one. Let's get it!

Over the years, I've watch the entire show 14 times so far. And it's amazing to me that I keep discovering new gems like the one you mentioned here. The writing is just phenomenal, along with everything else.

This show is littered with beautiful juxtapositions. Bunk (McNulty’s) partner ends up sleeping in the bed he made for his family, while he made that bed as proof to his ex wife that he could take care of the boys; he makes it and she still doesn’t let them sleep over. This goes a long way to show (which will be dived into later on as well) that the police force is his family and his real family is being withheld, which is the reason so many police end up divorced they can’t balance both; and yet here we have McNulty both being simultaneously pushed toward being full police by his wife and criticized for not being enough of a father by her too. Also we have the end of the episode, his partner, helpless and drunk, acting like a child, being taken care of by McNulty whereas we start with his kids being independent and assisting him by acting like cops. I’ve seen season 1 AT LEAST 8 times and I still discover new things every time I see it.

I'm glad you made note of how much of a backseat McNulty's storyline takes at times. You're even more right than you probably think, because even though he is the closest we probably get to a main character in the show he's not the THE main character. In fact, there'll be points in the show where we might go a few episodes without even seeing him. This show is a true ensemble piece and characters will drift in and out of focus all throughout the series. The only thing that remains a true constant is the city of Baltimore itself, so many (myself included) consider the city to be the true main character.

Just doing 11 & 12! I'll do 13 on it's own!

Episode 9 is one of my favorites, mainly for the basketball sequence. This might sound like a strange comparison, but it reminds me a lot of the wedding scene from Godfather 1, because it’s where the criminals “take a break” and do something festive, but because of who they are there are still moments of tension, like when Avon confronts the ref.

William Davis

Ah, enter Proposition Joe. He's a great character, and his actor, Robert Chew, was a good dude. He mentored a lot of the younger actors on later seasons of the show.

IT DROVE ME CRAZY THAT YOU WENT ON VACATION RIGHT BEFORE REACTING TO THIS EPISODE lol. This episode is one of those ones. The whole season finishes extremely strong. Are you reacting to episodes 11-13 next week?
