Time to pull my Kurosawa box set out again!

I would love to see James react to something like Kids or Gummo, especially with his street photography background. They are loosely scripted so I don't think they fit this month but both are def on my fingertips when it comes to future suggestions.

The most common mistake bad writers make is they overwrite. This movie is beautifully sparsely written. All of the characters are usually one trait, making them easily identifiable in a large cast in a movie that can't give them much screen time. But, those single traits are explored to their fullest given us a feel of texture, world building and richness to the writing. In my opinion, it is better to underwrite than overwrite. But, I wouldn't call this movie underwritten, sparse and focused would be more apt. The human brain is really good at filling in gaps so sparse writing is not a negative as long as you re giving the audience enough to make the rest of the connections themselves. This is might be actually the best method as if the audiences are making connections themselves, they are more involved and immersed in the narrative. This is kind of how Yojimbo sucks you in with the writing. It gives you just enough to start making connections yourself and then trusts you to go along with the flow of the story. A lot of screenwriters in Hollywood today lack the confidence to do this unfortunately.

Thought I would put this one out there again… Identity (2003) John Cusack, Ray Liotta Thriller/Mystery directed by James Mangold that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Love seeing Kurasawa on the channel! Hopefully the next poll will have some Bergman. A screenwriters poll without any Bergman just feels incomplete.
