FLYCER - TIMELINE #27120458

(Timeline Tuesday #154)

While the sensation of waking up cold in the middle of the night is something many of us have experienced, the cause is usually easy to diagnose—a window left open, a blanket that slipped off the bed, an air conditioning unit that’s been left on too long.

Sometimes, however, the cause is more insidious.

Flycer’s are tiny insects from a nearby timeline, no more than a centimeter long. They are blue in coloration, with five small legs lining each side of their frame and a central, oval head. They have four eyes. The most distinct thing about a flycer is their cubic, semi-translucent body, which resembles a small ice cube.

Interestingly, the flycer body functions in a similar way to frozen water. It is specifically designed to store cold temperatures, radiating this frigid temperature. However, after a long enough time the body will begin to melt, transforming into a jelly and allowing flyer’s to slip away into small, hidden spaces. It’s here they will rest during daylight hours, regaining their energy and hardening into a cube by nightfall.

Despite storing cold within their bodies, flycers function by consuming heat. This is their natural energy source, processing it in the same way that other creatures might process food. They are, therefore, often on the hunt for the warm bodies of unsuspecting sleepers.

A flycer infestation occurs when these creatures make a home near the sleeping area of a warm creature, often in the walls behind a bed or tucked within a wooden bed frame itself. They will crawl from their hidden lairs at night and surround the sleeping body, absorbing as much heat as possible. For the infested, this will cause frequently interrupted sleep patterns and a lowered immune system, although flycers are rarely suspected as the culprit. These infestations can last years, or even decades, especially since dead flycers will melt away completely and leave very little evidence of their existence.

Usually these creatures are only discovered by the investigation of an experienced timeline pest control expert.
