FWOMP - TIMELINE #11928003

(Timeline Tuesday #148)

Fwomps are mysterious creatures who have made their home in various woodlands across this timeline. It is their preference to congregate deep in the wilderness, although encounters with fwomps are becoming more and more common as cities expand outward.

This species can range in coloration, with furry bodies in hues of light and dark brown, as well as stark white and jet black. The one thing that remains consistent, however, is their neon green eyes, which glow brilliantly. The creatures stand approximately five feet tall and are shaped like a large thimble or bell. Little is known about what Fwomps look like under their fur, although their movement suggests a strange and particular anatomy. They do not appear to walk, but instead glide across the ground as though floating through the forest. Fwomp tracks appear to feature hundreds of small pads on which the creature propels itself along.

The creatures are shy and semi-intelligent constructing small huts for themselves and communicating in a complex language of chirps and clicks. Recordings of these sounds have been analyzed and translated, revealing an incredible and specific vocabulary.

Of course, as their name implies, fwomps are capable of producing more than just chirps. As a powerful defense mechanism, fwomps make an incredibly loud and resonant fwomp sound. This bellow is so mighty that is has the power to instantly kill a human, although fwomps almost never weild it in this way. Instead, they will produce a slightly quieter fwomp that causes any pursuer to lose consciousness, typically waking up fifteen minutes later and giving these creatures a chance to escape. Because the effects of this sound are defined by the way it resonates through bodies, ear plugs change nothing about the power of a fwomp blast.

Recordings of a fwomp’s sonic call do not have these powerful effects, however, and have been used in various forms of media. Many film trailers integrate fwomp blasts to create a sense of danger or urgency. A popular example of this is in the trailer for the movie Inception.
