While bloodblooze appear to function as a singular, semi-liquid creature, they are actually constructed from millions of tiny entities who share a psychic connection and interact to perform various complex tasks. Despite this fact, bloodblooze are colloquially referred to as singular creatures. This species can range in size, usually appearing at three feet in diameter but growing as large as 15 feet in some extreme cases. They take the form of blue puddle. This puddle is vibrantly hued and can move with unusual speed, slipping along the ground or crawling up walls at the pace of an average human stride.

Bloodblooze feed on sadness, using these emotional vibrations to sustain their lifeforce. The process of finding a suitable meal begins when the bloodblooze acquires its target, constantly listening for tears or howls of anguish. The creature will then approach, typically usually off into smaller puddles in an effort to go unnoticed. Bloodblooze are small enough to push through the skin pores of most mammals, at which point they will immediately enter the target creature’s bloodstream. The bloodblooze will travel to the brain of their host and immediately get to work consuming their sadness, slowly altering the mood of their target.

Once a target’s mood is elevated, the whole bloodblooze puddle with reveal itself and approach their mark. Those who are unfamiliar with this species may be frightened and run away, but others will often willingly accept a bloodblooze to feed on their sadness. This practice has become so accepted that many hospitals and funeral homes carry a small supply of bloodblooze for use with patients and mourners.

However, bloodblooze use is controversial for a number of reasons. Many believe that grief should be naturally processed, and that the using bloodblooze takes away from this important, but painful, experience. There are also cases of people becoming addicted to bloodblooze, and this addiction can be incredibly destructive. If someone’s sadness is consumed too consistently, the creatures will eventually begin to feed on other emotions.
