Another putrid dude

Long process on this one. Went back and forth on a lot of the details. Initially planned to animate it but by the time it was wrapped up I didn't feel like it was worth spending any more time on it.

Line art

Some line art "practice". I don't worry too much about line art generally. When it comes to designing stuff the base drawing usually gets painted over and torn apart very quickly. It's easier for me to sculpt shapes using big volumes and brushstrokes.

I'm not sure what the value of line art really is, but I feel that it does have some usefulness. Certainly I couldn't block out a character pose using shapes alone, at least not right now.

Eyeballio

Relatively short process to complete this thing but it was held up by a lot of studies in between. Had a bit of trouble with the hands in the later stages, which prompted yet more studies. I don't really know why I chose to have the fingers of the right hand clipping the edge of the canvas, it's a bit of an annoying distraction as far as the composition goes. But once I'd sunk enough hours into the image I just wanted to finish it up and get it posted, so the fingers remained as they are.

Studies, a WIP and an abandoned thing

Back from doing a talk at the Game Days workshop in Slovakia. Took a few days to get back into the swing of things. Spent far too long fiddling around with a painting (the crooked guy with the big head in the forest) only to decide it would look a lot more effective with a different lighting set up. The horns guy is the current thing I'm painting. Should be finished up soon.

Sketches n Studies

Working on values as always. I think being so habituated to digital painting has allowed me to become super sloppy with how I work up the value structure. The fact that you can constantly adjust and re-edit them means you never really have to get things nailed down; you can just keep tweaking for eternity. I think I'm gonna start fiddling with gouache, see if that can help.

Returning

Another thing with overcast lighting. Initially I didn't have much of an idea, but once I'd sketched out the rough line art the rest fell into place fairly easily. Most of the frustration came from trying to find a way to make the background seem interesting. Initially I thought it might look cool if all the trees were pointy pine trees lined up uniformly so that they resembled monster teeth. After fiddling about with that idea for a while I decided it just looked too flat, so I added some sh...

Grimy alien

Started out as as an incredibly concept-arty sketch that I very much dislked. Decided it would be an interesting experiment to see if I could turn it into something I didn't think blew ass. The result was semi successful. After some fiddling around I came up with a head design I thought was cool and managed to make the body less obnoxiously shape-languagey, but after a few hours of rendering I felt like I'd put in all the time it was worth. So I chopped off the legs and added some purple smok...

Scary lady + Sloppy Studies

Recently I've noticed a bit of stiffness in my work. I have a habit of continually drifting off course and then trying to wrestle everything into shape with a lot of rendering. For a very long time this has been an issue, but it's become more noticeable in the past year as I've become more interested in playing around with different types of lighting. It's also an issue that presents itself whenever I try to create an environment that isn't just a bunch of tree branches and grass. With the "p...

Pothead

Sort of a long sketch. The rough version included is essentially the point at which I knew the idea was going to work. Even though it was still super rough, I felt that the general composition was solid enough that the rest of the painting would mostly take care of itself.

Hiatus over

Finished up with client work for a while so I'm free to start making personal art more consistently. Here's a recent finished thing along with a few false starts/ sketches I've been poking at over the past few weeks.

Recently I've been thinking more about studies and what purpose they serve in an artist's development. When I started out years ago I was somewhat ritualistic about studying. I did as many as possible, usually between working on larger paintings. The studies generally wou...

Changes to Patreon.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I made a post saying I'm closing the Patreon. I've decided to keep it going with some changes to the way I run it. Here's a quick video explaining.

Pausing Patreon

Hi all,

I'm pausing the Patreon for a while. I've got a lot of client work to get through and very little time to do any personal stuff at the moment. Right now I don't know when I'll un-pause it.

Thanks everyone,

Dan

Wolf Animation

Added the PSD with all the animation layers (Had to downscale the PSD a bit so I could upload it). Was more complicated than expected, and as always took longer than planned. Initially I wanted to have a head fall out of his mouth, but decided to wrap it up before the next surge of client work.

Mummy Process

Started out with no particular idea in mind. Just fiddled around until I found some shapes I liked. It's always more of a challenge to work in greyscale for me. I think because I'm able to colour code the value structure when working in colour.

A right grimy bastard. Bit of an experiment to see how quickly I could build up texture without photobashing. Full process was nine hours, so not that quickly as it turns out. The PSD is full resolution. For these flash photo images I'm finding it helpful to keep the image size lower so I can utilize the pixilation.

Crusty Steps

Apologies for the delay on posting this one. Like a lot of my "flash photo" doodles this was meant to be a much shorter thing, but as the design developed I realized it needed lots of textural detail to emphasize the decayed look. Used some pretty grizzly reference for some of the finer detail. I think I was partly trying to replicate the aesthetic of a CT scan autopsy.
