Headlits are mysterious and frightening entities that resemble floating human heads. They feature small, wormlike bodies that protrude from the base of their central unit where a neck might otherwise be positioned. Upon this tiny body there are few features, although these entities do sport two frail arms that hang from the front of their form. Never once in wild headlit observations have these appendages been used. The eyes and mouth of a headlit are said to glow with a distinct blue color, but none have survived to confirm this.

Little is known about these mysterious entities due to their incredibly dangerous nature. Fortunately, their home timeline has been identified, and is diligently tracked for timeline tears that might bring the to our reality. This threat is seen as an international safety hazard, and programs built to counter headlit intrusions are active in most developed continues around the world.

The home timeline of headlits is a strange, distant place functioning well beyond the rules of our own existence. There is no ground to stand on there, as no planets exist, yet breathable are and some downward force similar to gravity has been observed. It is here in this hazy, atmospheric space that billions of headlits float about.

Headlits do not function with the same social structures we understand. They do not eat, sleep or traditionally procreate, and it is uncertain how they get their energy. It has been suggested these creatures feed off some energy force that permeates all things, but is yet to be discovered on this timeline.

These creatures spend their days floating about aimlessly, wandering the air until they find another humanoid lifeform. Once a humanoid presence is noticed, the headlit will do anything it can to make eye contact, quickly floating down into its target’s line of sight. Gazing upon a headlit from the back or side creates no unfortunately consequences, but looking into their glowing eyes will immediately and permanently cause the victim to enter a trancelike state. Even after the headlit is removed, their target will remain this way, and this effect occurs even when observing recordings of a headlit.

This state will last until the victim themself is no longer being observed, at which point they will disappear. It is unknown how this function works, although it’s suggested the disappearance methods are related to the phenomena of quarks and quantum entanglement. It is unknown what happens to the target at this point in their journey, but eventually they will return to the area of their departure as a fresh headlit, transformed into another one of these strange creatures.
