Sharkshanks are sightless, burrowing creatures that measure approximately seven feet in length. They have large claws that are adept at digging through tough dirt, clay or even cement, and a row of sharpened teeth for chewing their meals. While they bear a striking resemblance to the aquatic natural sharks of this timeline, Sharkshanks behave quite differently than these common animals.

Sharkshanks will eat meat if it is presented to them, but they are technically scavengers rather than strict carnivores. These creatures have developed a symbiotic relationship with incarcerated prisoners, providing a secretive digging service in exchange for scraps of food. This close relationship has even caused the sharkshank to develop a distinct black and white stripped coloration over time, similar to old-fashioned prison uniforms.

Long ago on a distant timeline, these strange creatures were likely nothing more than a simple landshark, but when they realized their tunnels could provide a means of escape to captives in need, the landsharks began habituating closer and closer to jails and prisons. Eventually, they ended up evolving into the sharkshanks we know today, scourge to prison guards everywhere.

Prisoners who learn of a sharkshank infestation can cultivate a strong bond with their local sharkshanks, feeding and caring for their new friend until the day they can use these underground tunnel as a means of escape.
