2021 K-music recs!

Hey everyone! Our own Tonya suggested a post where we can talk about our fave songs from 2021! I'm using the term K-music so it's not just limited to K-pop. My top pick of the year is The Real (Heung version) by Ateez which should be a surprise to no one, haha. Feel free to suggest more than one! The rest of my pics are on our Spotify lol.

BTW just thought of another artist folks might find interesting because of the fusion with traditional Korean music, storytelling, and motifs ... independent band LEENALCHI. Some of the members are also pansori singers. They often collaborate with this really amazing modern dance troupe called Ambiguous Dance Company. Discovered them (like so many things) through 2D1N. Here is a travel video they did with the cast members as part of the brilliant "Imagine Your Korea - Feel the Rhythm of Korea" video series: https://youtu.be/24iEAmpWn-0. And here is Leenalchi's YouTube channel (try Tiger is Coming): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCat--P6c-FHwYHRXWZCzclA

I was just browsing Groovl1n's playlists and realized the videos are in a few different places: ➊ BUM/BEOM: https://youtu.be/8XvGaLdtcJk; ➋ CARDIGAN: https://youtu.be/zSZgR7mvdT8; ➌ WHAT ABOUT YOU (duet with Ailee): https://youtu.be/zSZgR7mvdT8; ➍ LEAF (with 10cm; live radio performance): https://youtu.be/ysjOhbAz2lE, ➎ Gorgeous SHANGRI-LA MV from Ravi's former group Vixx: https://youtu.be/CYEaI5y7QaM

Yay, thanks for this thread! I am just eating up music right now so I'm eager to hear new things. In the BTS podcast I remember Alison saying that she started to get into the music through drama OSTs. That has been my experience, too, including 10cm from the CLOY OST, Jeong Sewoon, The Epitone Project, DinDin, of course Hospital Playlist, and many others. A lot cover versions of iconic songs from Busker Busker, Lee Moon Sae, and Seo Taeji & Boys finally led me their way. I'm now headlong into BTS and 2021's Butter is a pure joy (as is BTS generally). But if I had to name one artist who dominated my eardrums in 2021, it was Ravi. He's a cast member on variety show 2 Days & 1 Night and the lead rapper from a now all-but-defunct group called Vixx (I don't get into all their songs but really love Shangri-la and its sumptuous music video). Anyway, Ravi is a serious hip-hop artist and crazy good dancer, too, with his own label, Groovl1n (and now sub-label The L1ve, which includes Ailee), but does a ton of fusion. He has the deepest, richest voice. My favorite songs of his from 2021 are Bum (Beom), which blends hip hop and Korean pansori opera, as well as Cardigan (ft. Wonstein) with Latin beats. Most videos can all be found here: https://www.youtube.com/c/GROOVL1N/playlists. Precise links provided in post below ....

Soooo I'm is a top 5...it could be more because all are great for 87 different reasons...but anyway... In no particular order Chi Mat Ba Ram - Brave Girls: Summer Bop! Their story is just feel good. They debuted years ago, considered 2nd Gen but never found huge success. Until Rollin', which was a song they released 3 or 4 years ago...but someone on YouTube made a video of them performing it for military officers. They were basically quietly disbanding when the video went viral. ChiMatBaRam was the second song released after their Rollin' boom. Love these ladies! I Love You - Treasure: 13 member boy group from YG. This was their second comeback after debut. It's just a feel good song with a good beat. I feel like a grandma watching them because their maknae is 2005!! But it's still a good song! Dream of You - Chung Ha: the song is all in English, it took me a few listens to realize that, I was like is my Korean just all of a suddenly amazing! 1😂😂😂 But Chung Ha is such an amazing dancer and performer!! The performance video for this song is sooooo good! Finale (Show and Prove) - BtoB: this is BtoB's last song from Kingdom and color me surprised when this was the song I downloaded. BtoB has been around for 10 years but I was never a fan. But I eneded up loving all their performances on Kingdom and I listen to Get Real, a pod where Peniel, one of the BtoB members, is a cohost. Their singers are crazy good and so are their rappers. You can really see their experience shine through when they preform. Last but certainly not least... 5 STAR - CL: CL was my favorite in 2NE1! I don't vibe with all her solo stuff, but 5 STAR, is a sweet love song. The MV has Ian from DPR LIVE, I wanted them to be dating in real life when I first watched the MV. I'm soooo glad CL seems to be doing good, it was a little uncertain after 2NE1 disbanded and she went to the States but then NOTHING happened. Long comment, but I'm passionate. Can't wait to read everyone else's replies!
