The sun was shining bright while I looked out of the car, the air was hot and humid, and we were sweating like hell.

We drove in an old crappy car, and it didn't have air conditioning so it was pretty uncomfortable. It was one of the hottest summer days that I could remember so we had no choice to drive to the sea. Once we arrived, we noticed that it was absolutely packed.

''No way we are going to find a parking space,'' I said.

''I know a spot somewhere quieter, let's go there,'' Steven said.

The four of us got back into the car, and he drove for a while. The roads were packed with traffic and the heat was making things even worse. I was sweating like crazy and my back was sticking to the seat. Eventually, we arrived, it was a small lake with a forest behind it. It sounded like there was no one here, it was completely empty.

''Far better,'' Steven said.

We stepped out of the car and the fresh air felt amazing. It was a beautiful place and it was so much better than the beach. We grabbed our stuff, and we made our way through the forest, towards the water.

''Wow, this place is beautiful, and there are no people. How did you know this spot was here?'' Lisa asked.

''One of my friends told me, I guess a lot of people don't know about this place,''

The four of us walked in the forest, and I could hear birds and insects. After a short walk, the trees parted and the lake was visible.

''It's so quiet here, I love it,'' Lisa said.

We put our stuff on the ground and looked around.

''Let's swim, I'm burning up, the water must feel amazing,'' Steven said.

''Alice, can you hand me the sunscreen?'' Lisa asked.

''Sure,'' Alice said as she handed it to her.

I was excited but also nervous for today, it was the first time I met Alice but she is really pretty and cute. Lisa knows Alice from hockey and they have been friends for a long time. This was also the first time that I was going to see Lisa in her bikini, and although she was the girlfriend of my best friend, I was still curious. Alice and Lisa both disappeared behind the trees and they were changing. Steven and I were lying on the towels, and the sun was shining bright. It was a clear blue sky and not a single cloud was visible.

''Are you going to be fine swimming with her? I can see how you are looking at Alice'' Steven whispered.

''I've only known her for a couple of hours,''

''I know but she is cute right?''

''I'm not blind, and I've got eyes, yeah, she is, but we just met so, we will see where it goes,''

Steven laughed,

''Come on man, it's time for you to meet a girl. You need some experience before you go to uni.''

I guess he was right, but I wasn't sure if I should go for it, she seemed a bit out of my league. She had a really pretty face, she had long brown hair some beautiful brown eyes and some cute freckles. I didn't really have a type but Alice was definitely what I would consider my type. We heard some noises from the trees, and Lisa and Alice were approaching. Both Steven looked behind us and I was stunned.

Lisa's body was amazing, and her bikini looked stunning. I never knew that she had such amazing boobs, her waist was so slim, and her body looked so toned but with curves in all the right places. Alice's body looked amazing too, very similar to Lisa's, she was quite tall, and she was also slim and toned. Alice was wearing a light blue bikini with a flower pattern. They both walked over to us and lay down on their towels.

''This is so much better than the crowded and dirty beach,'' Lisa said.

''Yeah, much better,'' Alice said.

We all agreed and decided to go swimming. We jumped in, and the water was so cool and refreshing, it was perfect. We swam and splashed each other and we had a lot of fun. Alice was a really cool person to hang out with, she had a great sense of humor, and she was easy going. I tried to restrain myself but I couldn't help myself from looking at her. Every time I glanced, she would catch me and she would smile or look away. After a while, we were back on the towels, drying ourselves.

''I can't wait to start uni, it's going to be so much fun, living on kot, the parties and the clubs. Did I tell you guys that I found a kot right in the center of the city?'' Lisa said.

''No, really?'' Alice said sarcastically.

She had told me that at least twenty times already. And from Alice reaction, I think she had heard that story a couple of times too.

''You mean the one right next to one of student association and in walking distant to campus? No, I didn't know that yet,'' I joked.

Lisa rolled her eyes,

''Come on guys, let me be excited but both of you aren't going to be invited for all the parties,''

Alice and I laughed.

I was excited too, I haven't found a living space in the city yet but I have a few options. It's going to be so cool to finally have some independence, and to live the student life. It was even going to be more fun because the four of us were planning to study in the same city. I couldn't wait to go to all the parties with Lisa and Steven. All the new people I was going to meet. Maybe Alice would join too, and if not, there were going to be a lot of hot girls there.

''Have you applied for the courses yet?'' Lisa asked Steven.

''No, but I will soon,'' he said.

''Steven, the deadline is in two weeks. Come on, get on it. If you miss the deadline, they won't take your application,'' Lisa said.

''Yeah, I know, I'm working on it. It's all in the process, don't worry,''

We were hanging out and chatting and having a good time but it was getting late and we were all getting a bit hungry.

''Do you guys want to hang out at my place and grab some pizza and beers?'' Lisa asked.

Lisa's parents were well off and she had a big garden. We were all tired from the swimming and the sun and the pizza sounded amazing. We all agreed, and we gathered our stuff and went back to Steven's car. Alice and I sat in the back seat and we were really hitting it off. I didn't know if she was flirting with me, probably not, but it was nice to talk to her. The drive back to Lisa's home was about an hour and I spent most of that time talking to Alice. I couldn't wait to hang out even more with her tonight, maybe something will happen.

''Uhm Lisa, there is something I need to tell you,'' Steven said.

Lisa looked at her boyfriend with confusion,

''What's going on?''

Steven didn't respond, and Lisa started to look a bit worried.

''Wait, do you want to wait and tell me in private?'' Lisa asked.

Steven looked uncomfortable and I didn't know why,

''No, it's okay, I haven't told Timo yet and he needs to hear it too,''

My heart sank and I was getting worried, what the hell is going on?

''What is this about, Steven?''

''Well, the reason that I haven't applied yet, and why I've been a bit hesitant to do so, is because I'm not planning on studying.''

Lisa was shocked,

''What do you mean? Why not?''

Steven sighed,

''I want to explore the world and experience new things. You know that I'm not really the studying type. I want to do some traveling first, see where it takes me and after that,''

Lisa was shocked and didn't know how to respond, but suddenly tears appeared in her eyes,

''Steven, why didn't you just tell me?''

He looked ashamed,

''I didn't know how, I thought you would be mad or disappointed or something. And I'm sorry, Lisa, I just can't.''

Alice and I looked at each other and didn't know what to do, it was awkward. We pulled up to Lisa's home, and the mood was really tense. As soon as we arrived, Lisa stepped out of the car, grabbed her stuff and rushed inside. Steven and I didn't know what to say, and we were quiet.

''I have to go talk to her, maybe it's better for you two to head home. I'm really sorry, I didn't mean for it to be this awkward. But I will text you tomorrow and tell you what's going on,''

Steven left the car and went after his girlfriend, and I looked at Alice.

''I need to go talk to Lisa, she is one of my best friends and this is going to be hard on her. I think it's best if we will have to call it a day, I'm really sorry. I'll see you again?'' Alice said.

''Yeah, sure, don't worry. And tell Lisa that she can always call me or text me, and that I'm here for her, okay?''

Alice nodded,

''Will do.''

Alice followed Steven into the house. Although I'm good friends with Lisa, I didn't think it would be a good idea to join in as well so I decided to go home. I hit it off so well with Alice and it was a shame that I couldn't get to know her more. I was really looking forward to hang out with her tonight.  I grabbed my stuff and I walked to the bus stop. The whole thing between Steven and Lisa was weird, I didn't know Steven was planning on traveling the world. He mentioned a couple of times that he wanted to see more of the world and that he wasn't looking forward to studying. But it is a really dick move not to tell Lisa. But I shouldn't interfere, and I need to stay out of it, it is their relationship. I hope Lisa is okay.

The next day, Steven texted me and asked if we could meet up and have a chat. I agreed, and I went over to his place.

''How is Lisa doing?'' I asked as soon as he opened the door.

''Yeah, she is fine, she was upset but we talked about it a lot. It was a bit weird yesterday, I didn't mean for you to leave and I'm really sorry. It's my fault.''

''Yeah, a little, but no worries. Anyway, how is it going?''

He smiled,

''Good, she was not angry with me she was just disappointed that I didn't tell her sooner, which is understandable. But we worked things out and we are okay now,''

''Why didn't you tell her in the first place?''

''I don't know, I was just a bit scared. It's a big decision, and I'm not sure if she would have understood. It's not like I have the best grades and I'm not a really motivated student. She was so excited to go study this year so I didn't know how she would react. My dream would be to travel together with her but I'm not going to get in the way of her ambitions to study. It's important for her, and I respect that. So, I think it's for the best that I travel on my own.''

''Wow man, any plans yet?''

''I've heard some great stories about East-Asia and I always wanted to visit Australia and New Zealand, so maybe that's where I will go.''

''Damn, for how long?''

He shrugged his shoulders,

''Probably a year or something, or even more. Depends on how it goes,'' he said.

Jesus, at least a year? I know that this is his dream but I was really excited to study with him, and now that he won't come. But at the same time, I understand why he is making this decision, and it's his life.

''Lisa told me that Alice really had fun hanging out with you, and that you are a cool guy. Maybe you should put some moves on her,'' Steven said.

I didn't expect that, and I laughed,

''Come on, dude. She is a bit out of my league.''

''I don't think so, she is single and she seemed interested in you. You should go for it.''

A week past and I was considering to ask Alice on a date every day, I just didn't have the balls to do it. I never asked a girl out and I hated rejection. What if she isn't interested in me? I was so afraid that she was going to turn me down and then we wouldn't be able to hang out anymore.  I had been thinking about it and I thought that maybe Steven was right, I should make a move. Lisa had already given me Alice's number so it was just a matter of finding the courage to ask her. One night, while I was lying in bed, I just decided to do it.

''Hi, this is Timo, Lisa's friend. It was real fun hanging out with you and I would love to hang out some more, are you free this Friday?''

My heart was beating so fast as I sent that message, I couldn't believe that I actually asked her. I put my phone upside down on my desk and tried not to check it. Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore and checked.

''Hello, Timo. I had a lot of fun too, unfortunately, I can't hang out Friday. I'm going on holiday with some friends and after that with my parents.''

My heart sank and disappointment filled my body.

''No problem, have fun and safe travels,'' I responded.

Great, just great. Maybe I should have asked her to hang out after she came back. But she clearly isn't interested and I shouldn't bother her anymore. I went back to bed, and I tried not to think about her, but she was still on my mind.

''Have you asked out Alice yet?'' Steven asked.

We were walking to the changing room after playing some football.

''I did, but she isn't interested,'' I said.

''Really? I thought she liked you, Lisa was sure of it,''

''Yeah, I don't know, maybe not. It's fine, don't worry about it, man.''

''Well, you know that you wanted me to join you on the trip. Well, I can't come for the whole trip but I can come for a couple of months.''

Steven screamed and hugged her.

''That's the best news ever, thank you, baby. Thank you, I can't wait to go on a trip with you. We are going to have the best time.''

I was really happy for them, but I couldn't help to feel a bit sad. Steven wasn't going to go to uni and now Lisa was going on the trip as well. So, we won't be seeing each other as often anymore. This sucks, we were supposed to have a fun year together, and now we are going to see each other a lot less.

The music was really loud and I headed outside for some fresh air. A couple of minutes later I was joined by Lisa,

''Hey, Timo, are you having fun?''

''Yeah, your place is really nice,'' I said.

''I told you so!'' Lisa said as I noticed that she was a bit drunk.

''You look a bit sad, is everything okay?''

''Yeah, everything is fine. It's going to be a bit hard for me not seeing you guys as much but I'm happy for you.''

Lisa smiled and hugged me.

''Awh, Timo, you are the sweetest. Don't worry we will keep in touch and I'm sure you are going to meet a lot of new frieds at uni.''

Lisa was always really supportive and caring.

''Is Alice coming to the party?'' I asked.

Lisa smiled,

''Still thinking about her, huh?''

I rolled my eyes,

''She was really cool to hang out with, that's all,''

Lisa shook her head and laughed,

''No, she won't be, she is on surf camp in Spain.''

''Why did you never ask her out, she was into you?'' Lisa asked.

''I did ask her out, but she wasn't interested.''

Lisa frowned,

''Really? She told me that you didn't ask her out. What did you say, exactly?''

''I texted her and asked if she was free on Friday last month, and she said no because she was going on a holiday with some friends.''

''So? You didn't ask her to hang out when she got back?''

''Well, no. It felt like she wasn't interested. If she would have been, she would have said something right?''

''Oh Timo, she was probably waiting for you to ask her out, again. Alice is not really the one to make a move. She is a shy girl,''

''And you're telling me now?''

''What? I didn't know, I would have asked her out again if I were you.''

Fuck, she was right, why didn't I just ask her out again? I was an idiot.

''I'm going to ask her when she gets back,'' I said.

''As you should,'' Lisa said with a smile, ''I'm going back in, are you coming with me?''

The first month of uni wasn't great, I missed the introduction week because I was ill so when I started, everyone else already knew each other. I also didn't join any student clubs because I felt like I didn't belong there. Most of my time I was just focused on my studies, I did grab a beer with some guys a couple of times but we never really became friends. Normally, I had Steven and Lisa to fall back on, but since they were traveling the world, I was a bit lonely most of the time. Alice was studying in the same city but I never followed through and asked her out again. I don't know why but I was a bit scared, and I was afraid that I was bothering her.

It was a cold winter's day and it was raining outside. My umbrella was broken, and I forgot my coat. So, when the last lecture ended, I was soaked from the rain. The wind was blowing hard and the raindrops hit my face like needles. I was craving some warmth so I decided to get a cup of coffee. The small cozy cafe was really busy but I didn't mind, it was warm and smelled nice. There was a long queue, and it was slow but I didn't care, at least I was getting warmer. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice and I turned around.

''Timo?''

It was Alice,

Alice smiled and gave me a hug.

''I'm fine, and you? How is uni going?'' I asked.

I was happy to see her,

''It's great, I've been living with 7 girls all from my sorority, it's a bit crazy sometimes, but it's great. Did you join any clubs?''

I shook my head,

''Not really, no,''

She looked as beautiful as she did at the lake, but even more so. Her hair was a bit shorter, and her makeup was a bit different, but I thought it suited her. She wore a pair of jeans and a really cute sweater.

I got my coffee and I joined her at a table, we talked about uni, and how our year was going. She told me about the amazing trips she went on and all the amazing parties she was attending. She seemed a lot less shy than before, and I was surprised, the new environment brought out a whole other side of her. It was nice to catch up, we were laughing and enjoying ourselves just like we did at the lake.

''Any way I have to go, or I'm going to be late, it was nice to see you again,'' Alice said.

''Yeah, definitely, it was really nice talking to you. I would love to hang out some more sometime,'' I said.

Alice smiled,

''Yeah, we should catch up a bit more, maybe next week?'' She said.

''Sounds great, what about Friday?''

''Perfect, I'll have to go to dinner at my boyfriends' parents but that's in the evening so we could grab a coffee in the morning?''

Wait, what, did she say, boyfriend? I didn't expect that.

''Yeah, sure. Okay,'' I said.

She smiled at me and left. I stood there, shocked and I felt really stupid. Of course, she had a boyfriend, how could she not have one? This was so stupid, she was so into me, and I just didn't want to believe that. She was such a sweet girl, and she is a lot of fun to be around. Why was I so stupid not to ask her out again, now I missed my chance. I wasn't sure anymore to meet up with her for coffee, but I decided to just do it. It was nice and we just hang out as friends. It was nice to have some friends in the city but at the same time, I felt so disappointed. Why didn't I make a move sooner? I guess it wasn't meant to be, but at least I had a friend now.

The rest of the semester was really uninteresting, and it was a bit dull. My grades were decent but not amazing. I was hoping to do some more social stuff but that didn't work out either. I started to feel a bit down, and I was feeling alone a lot. I didn't even talk to Steven and Lisa much anymore, the time zones didn't really match up, and they were too busy exploring the world. I really needed something to change in my life, maybe I should do the same as them, and just go on a big adventure. But the thought of traveling the world alone scared me, so I just decided to finish the year.

When summer arrived, and my last exam was over, I felt really empty inside. It wasn't great and I didn't feel good about myself. It was the first time in my life that I didn't really like who I was and that I felt like something was wrong with me. So, I finally decided that I had to change, maybe a job or something to spent the summer would help, but I had no idea what. So, I grabbed my laptop and I started to look for some jobs online...

We sat down at the dinner table at a cozy restaurant in town that we hadn't been to before. We ordered some wine and as soon as it arrived Steven started to question us,

''So, they weren't joking about going to that orgy?''

''If you communicate, and you are honest, you can have a really healthy relationship with that. You have to trust each other and you have to tell the truth. It's a lot of trust and communication, it can be great,'' Nina said.

We grabbed a table and ordered some cocktails,

Hearing their names made my body tense up, that was a crazy list of people,

''Oh wow, that's a lot of people that we know,'' I said.

This was going to be a crazy night.
