Hey everyone,
We thought we would let you know what we've been up to these last couple of days.
We fixed Calcifer, it stopped overheating and we made it safely past Point Conception and over to Los Angeles. There was scale clogging the pipes, keeping water from cooling the engine - the things that you learn when you pry machines apart.
In Los Angeles, we made it to IndieCade and met up with a lot of good friends. The world feels really small sometimes, it feels like we know people everywhere.
After that we made our way further south to San Diego. The trip there wasn't pleasant, crossing the busy shipping lanes in Long Beach was stressful and the wind wasn't cooperating. The sails flailed hopelessly, we decided to motor the rest of the way. When we arrived near our destination, we took an unfortunate shortcut into a mine-field of crab traps. Shortly after that, we got stuck in a great big bank of kelp. The kelp was wrapped around our keel and there was no way to free ourselves, we managed to get out but some of it got stuck around the prop. This whole thing put a lot of stress on Calcifer, who once again, overheated. We were able to get to our anchorage safely but we worry about our engine, it seems to be a recurring problem.
Dropping anchor, we hoped to go ashore to stretch our legs but our little outboard motor wouldn't start (sigh). We're hoping to fix it soon, but seeing as it's an older model we're worried that it won't be easy to diagnose the problem.
We will be staying in San Diego until the 31st, it'll be our last stop before heading off to Mexico! We're excited to finally transit into another country, and towards warmer waters.
Stay turned for more updates!
Best,
Rekka & Devine
