Right, like the president told Katniss that if she doesn't play her role he's gonna bomb her district to the ground... he literally said he would turn District 12 to ash... AND AS WE SAW, HE KEPT HIS WORD!!!

He won the 50th hunger games when he was a teenager then was forced to be the mentor to every tribute from District 12 for the next 24 years. He killed people in the games then suffered some other BS i wont spoil then for the next 24 years he had to watch 48 children from District 12 die. Each of those kids came to him for guidance and they all died. So when he meets Peeta and Katniss in the first movie, he's a shell of a human and assumes they will also die. Thats why he drinks. Trauma, fear, guilt... (for other HG fans I left out some details and people bc spoilers!)
