I remember watching the Nine club review Verso when it came out, and Kelly Hart was hating on the 5050 at the end because it seemed oddly out of place- why end a line with the easiest grind trick after doing an NBD. This was because he hadn't given Mark enough credit to consider that perhaps there was an actual reason for the trick rather than a sort of "fuck you" or mini celebration after landing the NBD. I think it's possible that we're doing the same thing as Kelly here by criticizing mark for the way he released footage this year. Mark’s SOTY push was a self-aware critique of the way people scramble for SOTY these days. Mark is a smart guy, and therefore is probably himself frustrated with the overall quantity over quality mentality that seams to be permeating the industry with regards to the award today. As evidence of this, look at 2019, when Verso was released. Milton, sensing his grab at the award was threatened by Mark, released a second short part before the end of the year and ended up beating Mark. This sort of thing probably pissed Mark off a bit in the same way it gets on our nerves when 10 different “real short parts” pop up with mid skating. Given this and Mark’s high level of intelligence I think that what Mark did this year was probably intentional, as it highlighted how ridiculous the SOTY process is when someone can release 4 parts of mid footage (minus the last few minutes of each part) and win SOTY. Maybe I’m giving him too much credit here but I don’t think this theory is entirely unlikely. Side note: I'll point out that I just watched verso again and that all of the critiques people had of Mark's footage this year were absent from the part (i.e. lengthy lines ending in flatground tricks, and more generally a seemingly lower overall skate IQ) . I don’t think Mark got dumber this year, especially after rewatching his Jenkem thing where he tells someone he won’t do a trick cuz it lacks “taste”.
