Etrian Odyssey sicko here. I love these games and consider them one of my favorite franchises, despite never actually seeing one to completion. I think Stephen's "bed time game" inclination is on the money! I consider these more like "cozy games" than hardcore RPGs. Yes, it's all spreadsheets and math, but every trip into the labyrinth generates more resources to hopefully make the next time through a little bit easier. A real monster farm. My one recommendation if the aimless nature of these games gets to be too much, is to try the duo of "Untold" titles on the 3DS. These are essentially remakes of the first two entries in the series with some balance adjustments and new content. The biggest addition is a "Story Mode" in each game. This gives you some extremely light narrative, as well as a set party of characters. While some folks may say it isn't true to the what the series is about (which I agree with), it definitely gives you more a bit more to hold onto while getting into the series. Happy mapping!
