Our Client is our Focus

With recent events, I thought I would give you some insight into my past and my work ethic. Prior to working on Callisto, I had an extended career in engineering consultancy. Over the years, the goals of these consultancies shifted. At the start of my engineering career, it was all about the quality of what you were producing and acting in the interests of your client. Really from the global financial crisis onwards, the focus has shifted in consultancies, to a profit motivated, self interested stance.

The consultancy I worked for prior to Callisto, used to be guided by 5 key principles. All of these 5 key principles revolved around producing the best quality service for our clients. The phrase 'Our Client is our Focus', was one of these guiding principles. With the GFC, this consultancy suffered some financial issues and were eventually bought by a private equity firm. Over the following few years, their 5 key principles were abandoned and replaced by the 5P's (Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit). As a result, the management no longer cared about the quality of the work or whether our clients needs were being met. All that mattered, was that charged hours were up and expenses were low.

This was further highlighted last week, when I upgraded my internet service. I initially transferred to an ISP, whom has since shown to be profit motivated. Their email services were substandard and they strongly advocated using their router hardware. During support discussions, their resolutions revolved around trying to change the way in which I worked, rather than offering a service to meet my needs. After a few days of trauma, I made a decision to transfer to a competitor, whom was service focussed. All of the issues I had with the original ISP, were a non-issue following the change.

The above highlights what I am trying to achieve with Callisto and with future games. My profession change, has resulted from a desire to return to the old days. Where the work was quality focussed and undertaken in the interests of your client. These principles underlie the decisions I make with game development and my relationship with my Patreons.
