The Incubus System Chapter 1131. Cat And Mouse Game

The Incubus System Chapter 1131. Cat And Mouse Game

Nathan was an excellent demon hunter—sharp, relentless, skilled. But he was also a little too enthusiastic for his own good. Instead of tracking actual threats, he had somehow ended up in a ridiculous game of cat and mouse with my creatures.

I leaned against a rooftop edge, arms crossed, watching the chaos unfold.

Red was toying with him the most, darting in and out of sight, his fiery tail leaving brief streaks of light as he moved. Nathan lunged, barely missing him, cursing under his breath. Shadow remained just out of reach, slipping away every time Nathan thought he had him cornered.

I chuckled to myself. ‘Yeah, this is more fun than actual hunting.’

And then there was Miranda.

She was here tonight too. I had already ordered her to stay away from Nathan and the other hunters. Unlike my pets, who saw this as a game, Miranda had a mission. She wasn’t here to fool around. Her goal was different—saving humans from demons.

And she followed my orders without question.

I spotted her lingering near an alleyway, her gaze locked onto something unseen. She wasn’t paying attention to Nathan’s antics—she had her own hunt.

I let out a breath. ‘Good. She understands.’

Nathan, meanwhile, was still running after Red, clearly frustrated. I could hear his muttering even from where I stood. "Damn thing, hold still—"

Red let out a playful bark and bolted again, vanishing into the night.

Nathan groaned, running a hand through his hair. "I swear, if one more demon plays with me tonight—"

I almost laughed. ‘Oh, buddy, you have no idea.’

He wouldn’t catch them. Not tonight.

I stayed on the rooftop for a while longer, just watching. Nathan eventually gave up, muttering something about stupid trickster demons before heading in another direction. Miranda continued on her own hunt, unseen by the others. And my pets? They had their fun and now moved on to what they did best—taking care of the real threats in the city.

I didn’t interfere. I didn’t need to. They were capable on their own.

The night continued, quiet yet alive with movement. I took it all in, knowing that this was my world now. A balance between chaos and control, between watching and acting. And as much as I sometimes questioned my place in all of it, one thing was clear.

This was my domain.

And tonight, it belonged to me.

The city, the shadows, the creatures lurking within it. I had watched over it, controlled it, and let it move as I dictated. But now, the hunt was over, and I was just Ethan again. Just a 19-year-old returning to his room, expecting some quiet, some normalcy.

But as I stepped inside, something was off.

I expected to see Lilieth lounging on my bed, draped in her usual confidence, or Puriel, already curled up, claiming her place beside me like it was the most natural thing in the world. But instead… my bed was empty.

Neatly tucked.

No trace of them at all.

I blinked. Okay, Lilieth was one thing. She did whatever she wanted, and I didn’t exactly expect her to stick around every night. But Puriel? That was weird. She always slept here, even if she didn’t say it outright. Even if she never admitted she liked it.

A small frown formed as I stood there, staring at the bed, wondering where she had gone.

For some reason, my first instinct was to check Celia’s room. I had no real reason to think she’d be there, but something told me to check anyway. So I made my way to her door, hesitated for half a second, then quietly pushed it open.

And there they were.

Celia, curled up on one side of the bed, Foxy nestled beside her, and on the other side—Puriel.

Asleep.

The sight made me pause. Puriel never slept anywhere else. She always stayed close to me, as if she didn’t want to admit she needed the proximity, the security. But now, she was here, with Celia and Foxy, and she looked… peaceful.

It was unusual, but I understood it.

After our conversation earlier, maybe this made sense. Maybe Puriel was searching for something too, something she wouldn’t say out loud. Maybe, in her own way, she also wanted a family. But since that concept was difficult, messy, complicated, she had decided—at least for now—to take Celia and Foxy as her family instead.

Something in my chest tightened at the thought.

I smiled slightly.

“Good night,” I murmured, more to myself than anyone else, and quietly closed the door.

I made my way back to my room, my thoughts heavy but not in a bad way. It was just… a lot to think about.

After stripping down, I went straight to the bath, letting the warm water soak away the tension from the night. The city had been a mess as always, but I had controlled it. Kept everything in balance.

I let out a slow breath, running a hand through my damp hair as I stepped out of the bath and collapsed onto my bed.

The clock ticked past midnight.

I needed to sleep.

But I couldn’t.

No matter how much I tried, my mind wouldn’t shut off. It was stuck in a loop, replaying the day, the night, the small moments that shouldn’t have meant anything but somehow did.

I stared at the ceiling.

Family.

That word had been running through my head for hours.

I sighed, rubbing my face, willing myself to just stop thinking for once.

And then… A Soft knock came.

The door creaked open, and before I could even sit up, I heard her voice.

“Ethan?"

Lilieth’s tone was playful, but warm, the kind of warmth that seeped into my bones no matter how much I tried to resist.
