What's funny is if you go back to episode 5, around 17:30 of Joey's video, and 17:20 on Crunchyroll, you can see Bertholdt about to bite his hand when the tower is falling down. Little things like that make a story so good.

Reiner obviously didn’t write a WHOLE message. He probably just carved out letters like CR (for Center Rear) where Eren was And he got the idea that eren may be at the center rank because of Armin guessing it was the safest spot. They where all told eren was in many different locations by erwin that's why Annie attacked where she did but luckily erwin planned for an intelligent titan attack during that operation. The only reason reiner survived was because Annie knew he'd be OK since he's a shifter.
