What should the next video be about?

Time for a new poll! I can't promise anything, but I'll try to release a new video before Christmas, as it would be a lot more difficult for me to record a new video during the holidays. Here are the options:

1) Old patrons will be familiar with this video idea as I've had it for a long time. Here I would use the movie Total Recall to discuss some postmodern ideas about memory as something prosthetic, and the relation between memory, authenticity and identity. I might also use Blade Runner as an example. I'd mostly be drawing from a paper by Alison Landsberg, but might also discuss Derrida's idea of teletechnology.

2) This is a weird idea I came up with for explaining one aspect of Deleuze using drum machines as an example. I'd mostly be touching on Derrida's distinction between the map and the trace, and his critique of representational thinking, and MIGHT touch on the difference between organisms and machines. This would probably be a shorter video than usual, but might come out sooner because of that.

3) I had suggested this video earlier this year, but then got burnt out from working on my book and lost my motivation until I started working on the Berserk video, but I'll still make it if people are particularly interested. I'd point out some problems with certain common-sense or liberal views of freedom, and discuss a couple of different philosophers' definitions of freedom. I’d probably introduce Isaiah Berlin’s distinction between negative and positive freedom, and bring up at least 3 different thinkers who have positive understandings of freedom (I’m thinking Spinoza, Hegel, Nietzsche). The discussion would be relatively abstract but I could probably connect these views of freedom to some of their social/political implications.

Thanks!

Seems like the big and basic questions are always the most interesting ones. I voted for freedom as well. I would love to hear something about different concepts of freedom, like individual and social freedom.

Freedom topic would be amazing and timely (I’m sitting at a tram stop watching a ‘freedom’ protest at time of writing lol), but you’d wanna give that the space it needs, the drum machine video sounds more suitable for a quick turnaround before xmas, also timely bc here in Melbourne there’s a rave like every other day aha

been hanging out for that total recall vid, but given all the freedom protests and personal choice/human rights rhetoric coming out of the anti-vax movement, hearing about freedom would be really topical and timely. i wonder if you could take a look at the freedom/rights discourse through the lenses you mentioned here?

Since you did a video on Doom and Thatcher, maybe do something on Cruelty Squad in the far future ? The game has a lot of underlining themes that overlap on nihilism, commodification, corporate "ethics", gratuitous violence, corporal modification and alienation etc... I think it could be a nice fit for the channels and your interests. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388770/Cruelty_Squad/

EXPLAIN DELEUZE TO ME RIGHT NOW!!!!

1 sounds really cool, though I'm a little partial to it just because I wouldn't want a rushed video on deleuze. I also agree with Robby that ultimately our votes shouldn't decide

I chose 3 with 1 being a close second. But reading your intro to 3 I think we should get a 4th option: "Whatever you are most passionate about".

1 and 2 I might more passionately critique (which is fun) but 3 sounds more useful considering the level of fantastical thinking people want to do on the point of negative freedom. I mean look at Robinson Crusoe, well he got an island of his own for a start (edit: and a set of learned skills and culture in play; I'm reminded of the late David Graeber when he's not talking about bullshit jobs)(were one to ignore this, one does not even have to ask about the lockean proviso or as some an-caps (edit: rothbard) did it propose "morally superior people (descendents of workers)" to be our rulers with little to support the argument that we can look past the major effects of the business cycle's workings; edit: also reminds me of some an-coms who want to bring back indigenous cultures big time with little reflection. Well the moment promises are put on a pedestal, things go south, so what's resetting the game a little gonna do?). And the vid "1000 Castaways: An MMT Journey with Clint Ballinger" reminded me of how fantastical austrian and neoclassical economics is on the point of purely market based organization especially with regard to promises, credit. Although Steve Keen is still best on elaborating on the private credit based business cycle, it's emergent tendencies (yes Keen does compare economics to the weather at times and starts his modelling with a system dynamics approach). Varoufakis has a more flowery way to talk about this but kinda gets it too. GL and HF with whatever vid you chose to go for!

All sound great

I could easily vote for all three.

With the results being pretty close I think you should choose whichever you feel like. Not just saying this because I picked the first option ofc

Deleuze idea sounds interesting but I'm all for succinctly demonstrating the issues with liberalism as often as possible, frankly
