Early look at the next video: I deepfaked myself & it broke me

My next video is called "Is AI Making Us Less Human?" and it's about the erosion of trust that's started since AI-generated speech/images have become convincing. I deepfaked myself, it took an hour and cost $30, and I can't stop thinking about it. Messed up, dude.

Enjoy!!! Full video out later this month :)

Lily, I spoil everything for myself. 🤦

Ash Joubert

i fear you've just spoiled this video for yourself :o

Lily Alexandre

The most disturbing thing for me was the tightness of your lips at the end of each sentence, which I read as barely concealed distress. Most unlike anything I have seen before from you, and more like a hostage video. Lily, you have spoken of your struggles, but with eloquence, and I think you have just proven that your emotional expressivity is much more than just your face combined with words. How long before deepfakes can emulate the micro-expressions that convey emotion? Can't be far away. 😐

Ash Joubert

I'm with ya, that's the worst part to me too 😰

Lily Alexandre

I'm scared that this could've fooled me if I wasn't expecting or watching closely, especially if I was only listening. In-sun-sare got a laugh out of me though!

David S

Some portion of your audience: "what happened to James Somerton!?"

Folded Helix

Thank you for an interesting (and rather disturbing) preview of your next video essay. In the past I have been impressed by your understated smooth delivery of your fascinating viewpoints, so seeing your avatar lurch around was weird (to say the least). I suppose a quick clip of someone I didn't "know" would be a lot less disconcerting. Looking forward to the complete piece!

I find it deeply funny (I find it deeply sad...) that Lily Alexandray doesn't seem to be able to pronounce "in-sun-serr."

The uncanniness is intriguing, but I think it's almost a red herring, because AI is getting better so fast. I wonder what this is going to do a few years from now, when it's less uncanny, and the model makes better guesses at what emotions to express and what to emphasize with hand movements, the way an actor reading a script would. Like is all of the TikTok sludge just going to be AI generated people? Is the next James Somerton going to be ChatGPT scripts summarizing stuff from the web, run through a video model? Let's say *you* use it as a tool to help you make video essays (and you disclose it). Is that... bad? It seems like something gets lost, but it's probably still a richer art form than if you just posted the script as an essay to an online newspaper? Don't know what to think about it... Really looking forward to what you'll have to say on the topic.

Allow me to join the Greek chorus here saying that that was deeply uncomfortable to watch. The AI avatar 's hands were just weird in their movements. The jerkiness went away after a while, but I couldn't stop noticing your chin because it is one more prominent than it is in real life and two it was totally disconnected from what your lips were doing. There was no jaw movement as you said

Evie Rivka

Lily Alexandray, hey hey. Terri...I mean horrific stuff.

Jan Pospisil

Wild, and uncomfortable. It's somewhat reassuring that the virtual person has no effective command or understanding of emotion cues. But I suppose if a corp has to update a training video every three months to account for a new version of the order of buttons to push on the mail sorter, this is cheaper? 🫤

Andy Schwartz

Deeply uncanny, thanks I hate it, etc. Looking forward to the video :P
