EARLY ACCESS: Why Are People Trans?

Happy to get this video to you a full week ahead of YouTube! Everything is finished, except the music – that'll help with the pacing and make things more emotionally resonant, if you'd rather wait for the full release.

For 30 years, scientists have searched for a biological cause of trans identity... and haven't found much.

Why do we want to find a cause, anyway – and what do we do with the questions science can’t answer?

I go some pretty vulnerable places with this one. Hope you get something out of it <3

Thank you for Kalonymus ben Kalonymus ben Meir. I'd never seen this prayer. And thanks for mentioning Rachel Pollack. I was was a subscriber to the 'zine when that essay was published In Transsisters. I wrote fan letters, to one of which she replied, when she wrote Doom Patrol for DC. She was awesome. When you were calling the corners of the sex/gender space -- at about 10:40 -- you missed one permutation: Those of us who [desire to] change our bodies, but who do not much care about pronouns or on which side we button up our shirts. Maybe something for a future video? https://read.dukeupress.edu/tsq/article-abstract/5/2/228/134507/Medical-Transition-without-Social

I'm sure you get this a lot, but your videos are actually amazing. You're one of the most exciting new(er) faces on video-essay youtube. Your ideas are so compelling and sticky, I find myself thinking about them for days after you release a new video. You make me proud to be transfemme. <333

This is fantastic - thanks for sharing. That tension between the value/need of knowing and the value/need of not knowing is so fine, and you talk about it so amazingly here. I've been blown away by all your recent vids and shouldn't have left it so long to subscribe.

My favorite line as well. That's going to stick with me.

"A lucky coincidence" is a beautiful way to look at everything in life. Thank you for always making such incredible video essays that get me to think, reflect, and learn!!

The begining of the video reminds me of when ~22yo me received an email from 14yo me (those "send a message to your future" websites) saying simply "Are you something?". Well broke student mentally ill me sure adored that.

“Marine mammals, bright feathered birds, sunflowers, trans people”. So beautiful, honey. I love it. Another remarkable video essay.

I'm glad to hear it :) Really recommend checking out the whole poem, it's just wonderful: https://opensiddur.org/prayers/civic-calendar/international-civil-calendar/transgender-day-of-visibility/prayer-of-kalonymus-from-sefer-even-bohan-1322/

This was a very good exploration on the topic! I really appreciated the centuries old passage from the rabbi. It really bring into perspective how eternal these struggles are, even if the people involved may reach vast different conclusions tethered to their understandings of the world.
