NEW VIDEO: Do “Binary Trans Women” Even Exist? The Politics of Gender Conformity

My new video is here! Sitting at a respectable 39 minutes, it’s an exploration of gender non-conformity and the impossibility of being “binary”.

Excited to share this exclusive new collection of Gender Hot Takes with you all.

This is an early access version, but it’s identical to the final. It’ll be premiering publicly this Saturday at 8PM EST/5PM PST. Come hang out in the live chat if you like! I’ll be there chatting about the video.

(As I post this, it’s still uploading, so the link won’t work for another 20 minutes or so. I’d wait up to post it, but friends, it is very late, and I am very tired.)

Yeah, same, especially with specific medical things too. Like my mom kept trying to be like "not all trans people do hormones!" and I'm like, yeah, that's true, but it has no bearing on me, nor I on them. But it's tough in these spaces because the context is different and I feel like with the tenderqueer discourse it is important to keep in mind the youth and vulnerability in these spaces, which I feel like are often set up specifically to cater to the needs of people pre or early transition and it is kind of important to say "hey, there's no one way to do this, we'll respect your self-determination." Which is something they don't get elsewhere.

Thank you and thank you! :)

That sucks, I'm sorry - when I first came out, I had the same experience. Did not feel good!

Arguing about what group is more put upon or oppressed isn't productive, not to mention when you decided X group/person is less put upon you erase/delegitimize their struggles by saying someone has it worse. Instead of trying to decide who has it worse, we should just say "Screw it, we're all oppressed" and then actually get some work down.

really loved this video, have now watched it twice and am still thinking about it i feel it gave me a hold on how different identities intersect to dictate experiences of gender in a way few other things have. this and your other videos have helped me better think about my own gender too, so genuinely thanks a lot! it's making me rethink how to understand how privilege works. seems to me that privilege has to be described relative to existing power structures. like you point out, those power structures others NB and "binary" trans people and prefers they don't exist at all. now i'm no longer sure that it's helpful talk about privilege between the two groups, instead of different manifestations of the same cis-normatively (and for individuals it's interactions with other power systems). i think this has wider implications too. makes me think it's more productive to view biphobia or acephobia as different manifestations of the heteronormativity that produces homophobia. while bi and ace people often face unique discrimination, framing lesbians or gay men as having the same kind of privilege as straight people vis-a-vis these two identities seems overly reductive. similarly, looking at differences in experiences of white supremacy between eg South Asians and Afro-Caribbeans here on terf island, rather than privileges between the groups. i share your hope that this understanding will make it easier for us to find common ground with each other. fuck knows we need it. sorry for the long rant, hopefully it's somewhat coherent... anyway, your Kentucky Route Zero videos were amazing, i'm excited to see more videos on art!

Oh man. Thank you Lilian!! I feel absurdly lucky to have a chance at this, so it feels important to make them worth people’s time.

Thank you so much for this. This one hit home for me in some ways I wasn’t expecting and some areas of my experience I haven’t been fully integrating or understanding. Struggling to find the words, consistently floored by how much care, attention, and love you put into every video and toward each topic you touch on. Very excited for the ai art video, and hope your time making it is nourishing and rewarding
