September Update: Honey, You Got a Big Storm Comin'

Hi, everyone! Hope your summer's been nice so far. We just got over this brutal weeks-long heatwave here in Montreal, and I'm cherishing every breath of the cool September air. It's busy times at Lily Alexandre Inc, and I wanted to take a minute to update you all on what's currently in the pipeline.

As of the release of my last video, "Finding Hope", YouTube is now my main gig. I'm taking on a few editing jobs a month, but making video essays is now my priority, which feels wonderful to say. The newly-budgeted writing time has already made a big difference. If all goes to plan, September will be a big month for the channel. The next month will bring two mainline videos. I'm excited about both, but for very different reasons:

The first, working-titled "Do Binary Trans Women Even Exist?", explores how gender identities play out in the real world; all the queer, contradictory things trans womanhood entails, and why I don't think any trans person can really be called "binary". I'll be talking about the push to split the trans community into two opposing halves - "binary" and "nonbinary" - and why this worries me. To my knowledge, this will be the first video essay to use the word "themfluencer", and I am sorry. I'm aiming to release a working cut for Patrons on September 7th, and the final, public version on September 9th, but this could change.

The second, working-titled "The Surreal Dreams of AI-Generated Art", distills what I love about AI-generated artworks, and what makes them an exciting new domain. At the core of the video is a question: how do you analyze an artwork that doesn't have an artist? I haven't nailed down a timeline on this one, but it should be out the last week of September. It'll be the first in a two-part series, but more on that later!

I'm hoping to strike a balance between videos about art (which I have a blast making) and videos about gender (which I feel much more qualified to make, and which people expect from me). I'd be eager to hear what you folks would like to see on the channel - leave a comment and let me know what you'd like to see me tackle!

That's all for now. Take care, everyone!

xoxo Lily

Update: Patron version will be out tomorrow, full release likely for Saturday!

Oh wow, cool to have an art therapist in the audience! Another upcoming video is about the relationship between art and trauma, and might include a bit on art therapy, actually.

i’m excited to catch both of these videos! the first one because i always like to hear how other trans and nb people are doing and experiencing gender in everyday life; the second because i’m an art therapist and we always talk about a conversation with three participants: the artist, the artwork, and the viewer (usually the therapist). it’s very cool to imagine that conversation with one of the points of the triangle removed!

Thank you! Genuinely means a lot :)

I definitely don’t want to pigeonhole myself into just doing LGBT/gender videos, but I don’t want to alienate anyone by shifting my focus too suddenly, either. You’re right, it’s about finding a balance I think!

I look forward to all kinds of videos from you. As A tRaNs WoMaN, I like hearing your perspective on gender matters, but I also await the day when trans creators can just...create and not have to be explaining gender all the time. Will that day ever come? *shrugs* eeeh? So better carve out some non-gender time in the interminable meantime.

Going to refer to myself as a themfluencer from now on. Also, your split between art and gender videos makes sense! I personally have enjoyed everything you've put out, but seeing the lower view count on your KRZ vid, I get that other folks wanna see more gender related stuff from you. I hope as you grow, hitting this balance allows you to make the videos you want and that you don't feel pidgen holed into just making gender related stuff, because I really liked your thoughts on KRZ and I want to see your thoughts on other pieces of art! And I'm sad because that vid definitely deserved more views. Excited for the two new videos this month!!
