I am over 50. I suspect I am somewhere on the spectrum but I have never been diagnosed and over my lifetime I have had to develop my own coping mechanisms. When I come into a new situation/environment, I spend a good part of my time just observing how others interact and then I "build" an "appropriate" response for that environment. It wouldn't be until I became comfortable with the people/environment that my actual personality would show up. This is what worked for me and I guess it is an illustration of the old saying "fake it 'til you make it" but it served me through a successful military career (I suspect joining/being in the military was another way of coping because everything in the military is regimented. It doesn't change. It is a stable environment. I spoke to a mental healt professional several years ago and they told me that I am probably on the spectrum but, other than personal satisfaction, getting a diagnosis wouldn't benefit me one way or the other since I had already developed coping mechanisms that appear to have been successful for me. I retired from one successful career in the military and started a new career afterwards using them so, why change now? They said having a diagnosis would not benefit me one way or the other so I have never been formally diagnosed.
