I like this insight into their dynamics, but I disagree that Wilhelm was the only PoS in this situation - everything you described that makes him a PoS also applies to Heinkel. The same way Heinkel broke due to his mother's death, Wilhelm broke due to his wife's death. I think they're both equally shit in that regard

Q Flash

Fun Fact: The author of Re Zero said that if Subaru wasn't the main character, it would be Heinkel. The only piece of shit in this scenario is Wilhelm and not Heinkel. Wilhelm was a good husband but a terrible father and grandfather. He abandoned both Heinkel and Reinhard on his quest to avenge Theresia. Before he left, he outcasted Reinhard and blamed him for Theresia's death. Reinhard was left all alone with the responsibility of the Sword Saint at the age of 5 with his father who was clearly not right in the head and Wilhelm ignored that also. At age 5, Reinhard was outcasted by every single person and had zero support all while having the burden of being the Sword Saint and the blame of Theresia's death. Wilhelm spent all that time trying to free Theresia from her role of the Sword Saint because she was dumped into it, only to dump the role onto Reinhard when he received the divine protection. Wilhelm turned Reinhard into a monster, a true hero who will destroy any villain with zero hesitation because it is the "right" thing to do during battle. Reinhard being able to cut down his grandmother with zero hesitation is inhumane. During duty, Reinhard has to suppress his own feelings because he accepted the responsibility of the Sword Saint and he even calls himself "a monster that hunts monsters". You can see throughout the entire episode that Reinhard doesn't give a single fuck even though his father is on the verge of mental breakdown and Wilhelm is mourning his wife. That is why Wilhelm doesn't acknowledge Reinhard as his grandson and uses his title "Sword Saint Reinhard" when talking with him at the end. Reinhard has been dehumanized since 5 and was only considered the Sword Saint which is why he was happy when Subaru acknowledged him as a human when saying he would cover for the things that Reinhard could not do. At the end, Wilhelm abandons Heinkel again even though Heinkel just witnessed his own mother's death in front of his own eyes, and it was his son who did it. Heinkel clearly lost himself when his mother died because he was the one who suggested for Theresia to fight the White Whale. Wilhelm blamed Reinhard for Theresia's death and Heinkel used that as a way to cope and avoid blame, which is why it was even more traumatizing to see the scenario happen right before his eyes. Heinkel also witnessed his mother avoid the responsibility of the Sword Saint for his entire life due to the pain and suffering it brought. Then, he sees Reinhard become the complete opposite. Reinhard is a slave to his duty as the Sword Saint, something that Theresia fought all her life to avoid from happening which adds to his hatred for Reinhard. Not saying Heinkel is completely correct on any of these notions, but he is justified in feeling this way towards Reinhard. Theresia's death destroyed the Astrea family. After this episode, Wilhelm will never acknowledge Reinhard as his grandson and only as the Sword Saint, Heinkel hates Reinhard even more now, and Reinhard is completely alone still. The entire family is messed up in their own way.
